Just picked my 97 300TDi auto up from havingt some work done only to run out of diesel on the way back in the middle of nowhere.

Got back and was going to go back with gallon of diesel but dont know if I need to prime the engine handbook says I do .

Will it start without this any ideas ?? Please

It's de-cated so wont be a problem there.

Feedback be appreciated

If you are lucky and have a good battery, you can work the lift pump lever til you feel resistance, slack the 10mm bolt at the front of the filter head very slightly, keep pumping until fuel runs out with no bubbles then tighten it sharpish while pumping - then turn it over on the battery until it starts. If it starts, let it idle for 5 minutes (if you are in a safe place) then drive cautiously to a filling station.

This was the procedure I used when I ran out,and the same as an RAC patrolman used when called out.If you need a battery boost to keep turning over nice and fast, jump leads or a starter pack.

You shouldnt need to crack an injector connection for this, with any luck.If in doubt, leave well alone.

I was under the impression that the pump was self priming? Whenever I've changed my diesel filter, I just start her up and let it idle for a few mins, and she's ready to go. I'd have thought the bigger question would be, is your battery up to turning the engine over enough times to get her going.

The pump IS self priming.Doesnt hurt to get the fuel up to the filter first though.More cranking power left for the pump to self prime, that way.As I said, jump leads from the vehicle that took you there or a booster pack.

I would spin off the filter and brim it with derv, before popping it back on,just to make it easier on the battery
