Fitted my CB

My new Midland 248 arrived today with a SWR Meter and new Springer and mount, so after an hour I got it all fitted and with a SWR of 1.5 straight off I was quite happy. I couldn't believe how quiet the air waves are though, nothing like 30 years ago. I eventually got a rig check from a passing truck driver about 3 miles away so at least I know its working, I'll post up some pics in the next day or so. I'd like to see anyone else's set up in their Disco, I mounted mine in the drivers foot well, just about where my left knee is.

Do they still say "what's your 20 good buddy" and rodger, 10.4 etc etc

It's always a satisfying job I reckon. Where do you guys put the actual unit, on a disco 1?

Mine's on the fusebox by my right knee with the mic clip on the door, it works ok but does restrict me a bit getting in and out.

Have a listen to ch19 in the evening, you'll hear plenty of that sort if thing, and learn a lot about cb's- well, what else do cb enthusiasts talk about!?

Some things never change, funny enough the first voice I heard after switching it on was someone saying "Fooking Hell"

Mines on the other side bolted to the fuse box cover, I find its not in the way at all because it over hangs the cover to the left.

30 years ago it was illegal! - now its legalised it seems there is less interest. Useful when in off road groups though!

It was only AM that was illegal back then, just about everyone I knew was on the air I met several girlfriends over CB.

In those days we didn't have Mobile phones, or Computers and if you were really lucky your parents had a phone in the house on a party line with the neighbours, it was always fun listening in

Had a cb in my last car. 2 25w amps, base loaded twig, on a gutter mount with ground plane attachment. with rig on couldnt have radio on. all i got was feedback. when i was kid my dad had one on his sierra, and we had one at home with 100w amp. The one bonus is it is legal to use while driving. They couldint make that illegal like phones, as the police etc use radios, as do cabbies

Remember it well, I had a Hygain 120 x 4 channels (with a rodger beep) at home and in the car a small rig I forget the name now but it was the smallest at the time, had a covert antenna that look like a standard item then I got a 100watt amp and K40 mic and quick detachable K40 antenna.

All gone now via eBay.

And I installed party lines

Was down by my Knees but kept knocking it so now ontop off dash have seen them up in the pockets above the window might put it up there.. gonna check first size wise

use to love mine. before i could drive had a massive twig ontop of a 20 foot scaff pole mounted to the side of the house. mother wasnt that impressed though. all my mates were on it.
do u still need a license?

Love the wood effect. i did consider putting it there but I figured it might be a target for thieves.

And why do SWR meters need to be so fooking big!!!

No the license was abolished in 2006.

well in that case i may just get the old one out of its box.

best go get a gutter mount now. ally roof not to good for a mag

I have no idea around my way it was the Thunderpole that rocked...

Its funny because CB led me to a career in the Army as a Communications Specialist.

Just can't believe how quiet it is though, back in the day you couldn't find a clear channel and 19 or 14 where I lived was chocablock, you were lucky if you could get a word in...

Did the wood effect as as they were standard black walking up to car they stood out like a saw thumb on the brown dash, looking at getting another dash binicle. if i don't move it into the pockets above the windscreen

the antenna is the Thunderpole Orbitor springer long one monted on the spare wheel carrier

I got miine in the pockets above its out the way there, and i have no room on my dash, as i got the garmin satnav on the right of the binacle, a PDA in a mount for memory map on the left of the the binacle next to that I got the 3 way 12v socket with the blue tooth sat reciver for the PDA.

I cant realy see the need to leave the SWR meter in line all the time, but hey ho each to their own, just more on show for the light fingered..... and it cant do much for the coil that opperates the needle, all the julting about when off roading,

the chap that help me install it is one of these it's how I do it is the correct way type. That was the Original install not when i moved it

I am gonna take swr out, and just plug swr in once a month just to check it gotta make room on dash, don't like the sat nav base on window and i got a road angel to go in there some where,
also have to relocat the Video camera mount

yeah I not got elecy sunroofs so used the power cable in behind the light in the sunroff control panel
