Hi Guys, just like to say what a great forum , as i am new to disco ownership,( 300tdi auto ) ive been looking around & found some good tips on how to improve the old girl. Fitted the EGR blank kit today, could not belive how easy it was! spray bolts with WD-40 drive, 40 miles remove egr while manifold still hot, piece of cake! De-cat pipe next just hope this comes off as easy. Not been able to road test yet as missus been using disco all week & due to her female logic thought it best to let fuel guage show the big E & light up as filling up would mean she might break a nail & hands smell of deisel. BLESS!! So now she is running a bit lumpy & missfiring the disco that is not the wife. So i think maybe a new fuel filter is needed , unless anybody knows of a quick fix?

The first place to check on a TDi with lumpy running is the fuel sedimenter, as they get overlooked for years.

It's a canister-looking thing just in front of the offside rear wheel and is there to catch water and gunge - which it does!! Trouble is it needs emptying from time to time - which no-one does!!

11mm bolt on the top, undo & remove the bowl, clean and replace.

i always fill up before the gauge reaches the bottom quater....mrs hasnt bought any fuel for at least 10 years....when the last local pump attendant retired and the pumps went diy

Cheers Biglad, Ive got an idea what it looks like, saw a pic in the Haynes bible to day.
Will i need new seals to reassemble? or should old ones be ok.

Got the missus pair of rubber gloves today, she was not impressed & decided to take car instead, then i got a call to say its got flat battery! i needed that like a hole in the head.

Hi Dave re the sedimenter I've done loads and never put new seals in - and got away with it, maybe I wa lucky?? New seal would be good.

Re the battery business, don't know the temps in UK but over here for the last few days it been as low as -10° at night and doesn't get any higher than perhaps -3° all day. As a result it sucks the life out of any battery.

Peeps will tell you to go to Tayna batteries and get one of therir 1000mca marine batteries - well I've got one of those on my wife's TDi and cold weather like this it will only just start the car. The specs are lies that's all, wouldn't have another one if you paid me.

If you can, take the battery off the car and charge it up for a few days, that's ll help unless it's completely knackered.

Good luck

Dave

Hi Big lad, thanks for info on sedimenter will give it a go at weekend as ive no enthusiasm after a days work on a cold, wet & muddy building site.
As for the car BMW 530i had this problem for about 2 years now, time of year dosent seem to matter, start in morning & throughout the day no problem, then for some strange reason next time you try to start battery dead! jump start ok & will be no problem for a few months. There is no set pattern apart from sods law, only happens when most inconvienient.
