Argh!

I was driving home earlier in the 1990 Disco 200TDi with my high beams on and listening to the radio, when all of a sudden the battery light comes on!

And minutes later the car starts to jump and then the lights fade, along with the engine stalling and me ending up at the side of the road miles from anywhere!

I managed to get a tow home, so the first thing I did was check if the alternator belt had slipped off, or snapped. Nope, it was still there and tight.

So then I fired the car up with a booster and put a multi-meter on the battery, and just before the car stalled, it showed the battery had 0.01 Volts in it, so the alternator is toast I suspect!

My question is, would the one in my 1993 Discovery 200TDi fit ? As I could swap it over tomorrow if it will, and save me some money!

Go and take a picture of the front and rear of both alternators and post them up on here.

Would do, but my camera is broken just now, what I'll do is compare both alternators tomorrow, and if they look the same, I'll fit it and see how it goes!

sounds like the battery has had it as well.... sure ive read somewhere that trying to run the alternator with a battery much less than 10 volts will shag the alternator

So I'll pop down to Partco and buy myself a battery then! More expense!

Wait a second, what I'll do is I'll take the 5 month old battery from the other Disco!

I swapped the battery and alternator over this afternoon, fired the engine up and the voltage stayed at 11.9 Volts consistantly! Yay!

That he's obviously not put the wires back on the rear of the alternator, you mean?

it should be 14.7 Volts when charging at about 2000 RPM

i suspect your multi-meter is toast

I wanna know how a battery with 0.01V can turn a disco injun over ?????

I think he had it set for 1000v. and it was reading 10v
