Default 300TDi wiring loom

I'm in the middle of removing the engine from my 96 300TDi. It's taking an awful lot longer than I thought as it appears that the wiring loom needs lots of disconnecting.

Both Haynes and Rave state that the engine loom can be detached simply by opening two multiplugs under the dash. However, when I look and trace the wires from the engine bay to the plugs, there seem to be at least 2 other bundles that are not connected to multiplugs.

All the wiring looks standard (it's all in the same covering stuff at any rate) so my question is are the multiplugs noted the only thing that really needs disconnecting (apart from the odd earth, starter motor, etc)?

Cheers

There is a white plug with approx 9 wires in it and a brown square plug with about 4 in it. Then if you have aircon there is a yellow relay in the drivers kickwell. Pull that out and thats the loom free.

Hope this helps

Cheers for the reply. Been up to the car tonight and double checked. My loom definately has 4 covered bundles coming from the engine bay. 2 go to the multiplugs mentioned, 1 goes up under the dash, the other goes to the kick panel. Not had the chance to see if these disconnect easily so does anybody have an idea if they do or what they are for?

Finally got the engine and box out of my car. Few things broken and/or bent.

After taking the advice on here about pulling the engine and box together, it's lucky I have a friend with a large field and JCB. Plucked it out like a rotten tooth but it was a squeeze.

Now to get the other one out and into mine!

In terms of the wiring, the loom is supposed to come out with the engine but I've left mine in. Finally found where all the extra wires go and the loom is a far bit different to how RAVE and Haynes say.

Next questions are;

The loom on the 93 300TDi and 96 300TDi are different. The 93 engine will be coming out with the loom attached. How easy/hard is it to change the wiring over once the engine is in?

As for getting the engine back in, what's the best way - try to put the whole lot in in one go or split and put the box in first then the engine (or even the other way around?

from the trouble I had with the top flywheel housing bolt on the way out I reckon an all in one return may be easier....cos I dont fancy doing up that top bolt with 4ft of extenders on the socket.....
...but my advice may not be the best as Im half way through my first disco in and out so havent got the most experience
