hi pepople have been searching this topic abit and have found bits and pieces of info but nothing realy conclusive.

i have a defender 90 with a nakered 200tdi engine init and a lt77 gearbox. i am trying to find out how hard its going to be to fit a 300tdi in its place? i understand that im guna have to play around with engine mounts (any tips would be great) but my biggest concern is the connecting to the gearbox, ive read about people swapping flywheel housings or cutting bits off various housings and its left me a little confused..... can any one tell me exactly what needs to be done in this respect?

also is there any other aspect im overlooking?

thanks in advance for any help guys!:D

i would relly think of getting a disco 200 tdi engine and swapping parts over if yours is a defender 200 ,300 wont give you more power

i prefer putting 300 in its proper place but would require some work gearbox ,floor plates new props ,engine mounts etc ,but some fit them as 200 ,id still sell 300 and get 200 ,you dont need to swap flywheel housing i never have ,not all bolts will go in but more than enough to secure gear box

its a bit more than folks would first think James, its not just swaping manifolds as im sure you are aware. I did it with mine a year ago, all the timing gear had to come off to swap the cover and backplate, the alternator brackets are different, the injector pipes are slightly longer, the water pump and im sure there was a few other differences.
I had a 300 disco in the yard for breaking with a mint engine but didnt want to mess with mountings and exhaust etc so bought a 200 engine. I wish i had put the 300 in now lol although i do prefer 200`s

no not so much hard work, but i got a disco 200 without ancillaries thinking i could just fit it with my fender manifolds and ancillaries, with the engine fitted and bolted in i soon discovered i couldnt lol. i didnt realise how diferent the 200 is between the disco and the fender, im sure im not the first person to do this and i wont be the last, teach me to read up be fore doing anything similar again.

ok thanks guys, so what your saying is i can fit the 300 in place of the 200 if i mod the engine mounts. and that it will go on the gear box but not all the bolts can be used.

but you rekon that i would just be better of sellin it and tryin to find a 200?

no there is more little differences than first looks, the last one i converted i forgot to put the little gasket that goes behind timing cover in the right place for tensioner stud and it leaked oil into timing housing ,but 200 is a bloody good engine

stick with the 200 its a straight swap and in my oppinion a better engine
