Far away from you!!
Chaps after fettling my pump for less smoke and a fraction more power (useability really!!) I have been getting around 250-300km from a full tank consistently over the last 3 months.

That's A road driving at 60, up and down hills but no towing, mainly local trips but occasionally hour+ trips.
I drive steadily but I do work the gears to keep road speed up, when cruising I sit around 60mph/100-110km/hr

Am I drastically using up to much fuel or is that about right? I know the 90 tank isnt that big!

Cheers

Ed

should be getting near to double that I would have thought

Seems a bit low. There are so many variables however. If you drop your cruising speed to 55/50 it will probably make a difference. I'm getting between 30 - 35mpg on the same kind of journeys - mix of town and 100 mile trips.

I don't do kilometres, and not sure how big the tank is either, but I would have thought that is very juicy. My 2.5td does about 30 to the gallon on general road use.
Knocking 5 mph of cruising speed will usually save a lot of fuel, but it may be you have caused it to overfuel by adjusting the fuel pump.

So call it 200miles, approx 10 gallons used in the tank (I don't run it dry and fill up when the light comes on)

So that works out about 20mpg, so either I am massively overfuelling or I have a leak on the fuel system somewhere.

I have no diesel in the sump and it smokes not that bad (mot smoke test was excellent) and the exhaust doesn't smell 'fuelly' if you see what I mean.

I will try cruising it a bit more rather than driving it in a way to keep the revs up, see if that makes a difference and will report back.

Seems it is a bit thirsty, maybe a bit due to tune and a bit due to my heavy foot.

It isnt so much of an issue as it's my 3rd car and doesn't get massive use but just started to wonder!

Cheers

light usually comes on with 1/3rd of a tank of fuel left in it.

Brim the tank. drive 100miles or there abouts. then brim it again. check Ltrs used and work it out from there.

Mine agrees with Ferguson, about 28mpg before my rebuild. I think I'm getting about 500km to a tank (empty light flickering). 110 tank is 80ltrs and it usually takes 70ish at the pump, think yours is around 50?

Yeah my tank takes about £45 - £50 but my empty light ones on at a quarter of a tank left

Will modify my driving style and see how much of a difference that makes aswell as brimming the tank etc

I managed to get mine down to 5mpg the other week

Binding brakes and a leaking fuel pump doesnt do much for it haha

From what Ive seen, you should be getting between 25 and 35, mines on the low end due to the roof rack

Im sturggling to get 18mpg, and mine wont go over 50mph either :(

Can't wait to get it ripped out and gone!

Matt.

To be fair, that's a bad example, probably just needs the injectors refurbed. Mine will cruise all day at 50 with no bother, and as said before will do 35mpg (measured pretty accurately) on a mix of long and short runs.

Id expect about 300miles min.

When your tank claims it's empty, is it really, if I relied on my fuel gauge it would have me believe I can only drive 200 miles on a tank, but it then only takes about 7 gallons to fill, so i need to sort my sender - I had it out for months last year when I was doing a rebuild and think the float arm got bent.

Yes, I agree, if the measurement isn't right you have no idea.

What I do is fill up right to the brim of the filler neck,re-set the trip meter, then drive until the gauge says about a third full. Then I go in to the fuel station again, and brim the tank agin. So I have the exact mileage on the trip meter, and the exact fuel used on the fuel receipt. Pretty accurate, I think. :)

Okay maybe found the culprit for my shocking fuel economy.

The fuel adjustment screw was nearly out, I am lucky I didn't lose it. Anyway when the engine was running it was dripping fuel onto the floor.

I have screwed it halfway in to start and will adjust from there, initial impressions seem to be that I have more power but am also smoking more so need to find a happy balance.

Okay more accurate test is in.

Brimmed the tank till i could see it in the filler neck. Drove 100miles and refilled to same point

took 15.3 litres which is 3.365gallons

100/3.365 = 29.7MPG

So not that bad really. I have reset the odometer and will see how much i get out of an entire tank.

Thanks for your help chaps

I think Millers helps MPG a bit. Hard to tell how much, but there's definitely a power/running improvement with the octane raised. I'm using "power" in the purely notional sense, of course.:D

Little bit of cetane boost cant do any harm, and it cleans injectors and lubricates the fuel pump too :)

Many other excellent fuel additives are also available! :D
