In my under the seat tank (300tdi) I get about 180-200 miles until it is in the red, that can't be right surely??

It never says it is bang full though, so I'm wondering if I can just bend the sender...

The way to check is - Fill a Jerry can, fill the tank, drive till you run out, look at counter. Make adjustments.

On average I used to get around 240 miles out of the tank on my 200tdi. If the underseat tanks are all the same then I'd say your not getting quite a full tank in

Yeah, those were my thoughts too. I was talking to someone yesterday who got about 280, I know I am probably not that economical with my driving, but that is probably too big a difference!

First thing to do is find the mpg. Do this by topping up the tank to absolutely full and then doing maybe 120 miles and topping up again. Calculate the number gallons used (litres/4.54) so total/gallons or total/litres/4.54 and you should get maybe 25-30mpg. (I would check for leaks whilst doing this as this could also be affecting things - mine had a sender top gasket leak). Now you have the mpg you can calculate the total capacity of your tank. mpgX12 (tank capacity in gallons) ..... So mine should be 30x12 = 360 miles approx

If you now drive and the light comes on at 180 miles or something like that then possibly your sender isn't working but if it gets to something like 300 you know it's all working correctly.

(based on 12 gallon tank. There seems to be a bit of an argument about the tank size as also seen it quoted as 10 gallons!. If yours is 10 gallons just substitute that figure above)

275 miles but i'll have about 6 litres left. When I changed my tank some 9 years ago I brimmed it from empty and it took 52 litres. I usually fill when i get to the 270 mile mark. Brimming it from the 270 mile mark usually takes 44 - 46 litres. It's a 300tdi.

Thanks, I'll see how many litres the tank takes to fill up next time.

Don't take any notice of the gauge. In my case, the low fuel light bulb would have been illuminated long enough to blind me until I get round to filling it :)

I rarely run it empty enough to know how far it will go on a tank, but now and then I brim it run it a while brim it again and check the trip mileage and do the maths,
I get around 35mpg.....

However it is a new 300tdi engine, recon box and rebuilt running gear, with about 4k miles on it....

I was told the tdci engine would average 30-31 mpg with sensible driving.

60L tank (13.3Gal) 13.3 x 30-31 is around 400 to 412.
Anyone had anything around this number?

Managed 300 from my 300tdi once but that was getting down to vapour and me developing a degree of self preservation.

ive never seen my fuel light on my 90 as it cuts out at 1/4 of a tank, nor have i ever filled it up...

i just guess when i need fuel lol....

I also do a lot of off roading with low box so i couldnt possibly say....

I tried bending my sender down and now my sender move between half and 1/4 and thats all it moves lol...
