Does anyone know of an easy fix for the hot starting problem suffered by the 2500cc BMW engine. theres a gizmo on ebay which is said to bypass an engine management procedure making it think that the engine is cold therefore starting faster, but i was wondering if anyone knew of a safer proven way of achieving the same result. thx lads.

Theres a lot of info on here re this issue.
I have the gizmo fitted from Ebay, I would say the only problem is it takes about 20 mins from startup for the engine map to return to normal.
There is a view that a timed relay instead of the standard relay works better.
I have not been able to find one suitable yet, but when I do I will make the change.
The down side of the map change is you use more fuel in the early stage of running, so if you are on short runs only then it is an issue, if how ever you do a lot of longer runs, then there doesnt seem to be a penalty.
The other issue I have is I cant remove the gizmo, cos when I do then the check engine light comes on, and I have no Turbo boost. If once started I remove the pwer lead to the relay, thus dropping it out then the map changes and I have normal running.
I dont understand why this happens, maybe I have a temp sensor not functioning fully.

The gizmo i was speaking of on ebay says that it does have a 30 second delay before handing back control to the ECU so it sounds like a good proposition then. thanks for the quick reply.

This mod needs to be done properly with a timed relay, the single relay and resistor type that was for sale on e-bay is no good. All it did was to switch in a 2k resistor - permanently, this ran the glow plugs etc for starting but it stayed on all the time. This give a high idle speed and did not allow the engine ecu to alter injection characteristics as the engine warmed up.
The timed one only switches the resistor into the circuit for long enough to run the glow plugs and increase pump advance to start.
The real answer is to have the pump rebuilt, but this is expensive and not many fuel shops want to tackle EDC pumps.I did one for a local garage a while back using an ordinary 5 pin relay,a LR TDI glow plug timer and the 2k resistor,it worked well - but the pump on that car was really shot and I dont think it will be long before the pump will have to be done.

I'd like to know too as my running issues may be tied in with the old type single relay/resistor. Some of the characteristics/symptoms mentioned above by eightinavee & daveB284 sound familiar. Where would I look to see if this "old type" is fitted?

Thanks for that, is interesting reading I don't have cold or hot starting probs. fires first crank every time but I do have tickover at 850 & lately, poor consumption & off colour performance . Will get someone brighter than me to look into it but as car has a Superchip fitted could throw everything into chaos. not sure which end to start at but if anything relevant appears will post up. Thanks for link
