WTF is that Dave?

Actually I do know how to use a drill:p I was trying to find a comfortable position on the ladder cos Sue wouldn't let me stand on the tyre:rolleyes::p
Thanks as always for everyones help and support, it would appear that things may not be as bad as they seemed last night. Awaiting an update from Neil:D

you want one of these, I got one (from a car boot) and its great.

it runs.
damn thing.

what presented last night as a flat battery, appears to have been, a flat battery.

off load, the battery tests out fine, 12.5 volt, but with all 3 batteries jump leaded together, on load voltage dropped to between 5.5v and 7v.

the engine struggled to turn over, giving the impression it was hydraulicing. (google it, I aint explaining now)
this morning dave's battery was put on charge. (after I fixed my charger, cheers whoever dropped it!)

knowing my batteries are good, engine tightness and timing would cause slow turning over and stalling of the starter. reluctant to strip down to the the timing gear, the heater plugs were removed, number 4 being really tight all the way out, and wound over by hand using a socket and ratchet on the crank bolt.

nowt untoward, so the rocker box top removed to check for bent push rods.
all appears ok there.

timing was checked with the timing pins, after I found the flywheel tdc notch. (never timed an auto before)
the pump timing pin wouldn't drop in the locating hole, so with the flywheel pin out the engine was turned by hand and within an eighth of an inch the pump pin slid home.
not bang on, but near enough to rule out a chewed up timing belt.

scratched the head, had a coffee an a fag, and decided to clean up number 4 heater plug hole. (full of carbon)
after an endless search for a 9mm drill bit (found loads of 9.5's), the drill bit was carefully wound down the plug hole by hand, then the engine turned over on the starter to blow the ****e back out.

daves battery, been on charge for about 3 hours, managed about 3 seconds of fast turn, (remember no plugs in, so not a lot of load) then promptly stopped.
click click click. no slow turning, just enough to make the solenoid chatter.
swapped the battery completely for one of the wagon batteries, and the engine flies round.
stuck daves battery on a 15 amp charger and left it.

put the plugs back in (number 4 was shagged, rest ok, put the shagged one back in number one cos its easier to change later) put the rest of the removed bits back together, tried starting it on the big battery, no problems.

why no charge light on the dash? (became apparent last night, seems its never worked)
does it charge?

wiring to alternator connected ok, brown/yellow wire should be the charge light, should be plus 12v ignition on, engine off. alternator should drop this to earth when its not turning, which brings the light on. when turning, alternator produces 12 volt so light gets 12v to each side of it, which means 0v across the light. which means its off.

so, I test the charge wire (12v, good) so I drop it to earth.
fortunately, I "wiped" it to earth.
cos there were an almighty gurt spark.
"that's a permanent feed, no lamp in it"
hmmmmmmm....

metered the alternator charge terminal to earth. nowt. (should be down to earth when not turning, remember)
wonder if that fubar'd the alternator?

so, on the battery-
static voltage (engine off) 12.5v running voltage 12.5v, clamp meter (measures dc amps) 1.5A discharge. not good.
gave it a rev and not much happened. gave it a bigger rev (more really cos it sound nice and I was getting a bit cheesed off) and the ammeter bounced into life reading 60 amps.
tick over saw it gradually crawl down from this figure to about 20 amps after a few minutes. (which is how it should be)
so it appears some ones botched up the charge light circuit, and it needs a big rev to kick the alternator into action.

quite chuffed it works now.

took daves battery off the charger, disconnected the big battery, reconnected the original. starts no problem.

took dave to my owse', ready to pick sarah up after work, all seems ok.
though theres a wagin battery, a 12mm and quarter whit spanner taking up residence in the passenger footwell.......

wtf is that about, dave?

A deduction
The rectifier could be buggered might be a good idea to if you have one swap the altinator to see yes good amps but sounds like its intermitant
Fantastic work mate
Now all you have to do is turn it into a v8 lol

rectifier's ok cos it charges healthy.
charge light circuit aint intermittent, its ferked.
(probly a fried scr after the regulator)
aint got any spare 300 alternators kicking about.
an I don't do v8's.

nb- I didn't know there was 2 sizes of fan belt for the 300. early and late, about an inch difference in length.
dave now has the right one (early) and the squealing's stopped.

just no charge light. but that's for another day.

Ooh I want one:D

cept mine is bent, cos i left it on, and reversed... tis fine though :)

LOL!!!!:pound:

I have just returned from my las crusade and see a wench in need of assistance

Another knight..or is that night,( better not start that again:p) Looks like Neil has some competition!:D

I think either Dave or Sarah has a thing for Neil and all this "going wrong stuff" is just a pretext ;) :D

Dave is a moody git and fell out with me cos I drilled a hole in him:mad:...poor Neil just happened to provide the drill so copped for it too:eek::D:D:D

I'm not so sure, I think Dave thinks Neils place is the Landy equivalent of the NHS or perhaps a spa :D:D:D.

If he's not feeling so good he's going to wait till he gets to Neils and refuse to leave until he's fixed.

Dammed right, elf n safety and all that :eek::eek: You aren't tall enough to reach :p you would have to put the drill over your head :D:D:D:D
