Would kitting it out increase the value substantially ?

Along with my friend, I run a small car dealership (I barely even consider it work, just something to keep me sane) and this morning I picked up a 1991 Defender 110 2.5 Diesel, white in colour and in alright condition. No dents or anything, just a bit dull and scratched.

With some polishing it would come up pretty good.

Mechanically it is perfect, despite having 135,000 miles on it, but I know myself those old Defenders aren't worth much.

So, I was thinking - If I put some chunky tyres, a snorkel, and a few other off road things on it, would it increase the value by a bigish amount ?

Before you say it - I'm not keeping it for myself! It is tempting, but then it is tempting whenever I get a Landy in, but I've learned that even though I could afford it, my wife would never forgive me if I brought another car home, sadly.

Some like to buy unmolested landys, others like the butch approach. Have you got any pics? If the landy in question is a CSW it could be worth more than you think as it is.

Is this a 200 Tdi?

Wouldn't worry too much about bodywork to be honest - as long as engine runs well and chassis/bulkhead are in good condition, would have thought it would be worth £2.5k - £3k

Not convinced adding toys would do much to the value, but may make it more attractive to some

That said, if we get March snow i will shift like **** off a shovel:D

Well I paid £1,500 for it from the daughter of somebody who died and left it to her in a Will, but she had no use for it as she has a 2008 Disco.

I did a bit of research and it looks like I got a bargain.

I'd tidy it up, give it a proper service, get the brakes spot on, all the bushes, make sure the drive train is good, all the fluids are done, sort out any little niggles and try and just get it into a good unmolested state.

I think that would sell better than something thats had time and money spent on it adding things that many buyers probably don't want, and once they are on some of these mods can be taken off again, so leave it a blank canvas.

Depends who is buying it, some would think 'Oh great all the work has been done, I'll pay more because no work needs doing' whereas others will think 'Oh damn, he's done all the work that I wanted to do and now he's asking too much for it' myself I'd rather buy cheap and spend money on kitting it out to my own personal taste, everyone's different :D some may not like snorkles or big tyres

When I was looking to buy I wanted a landy that did not look like the farmer had actually used it as a toilet on a day to day basis because I was worried that I would inherit too much work but I also avoided anything that looked as if it had suffered major changes because I was worried that this implied that some idiot had ragged it off road and as a result it woudl be abused. I was looking for a tidy original vehicle that was likely to need some minor work and upkeep and that I could add bit to according to my taste. I would tidy it up but I would try and keep it all original looking.

Spot on - that's exactly what I did - standard and not previously destroyed/ill treated was my search criteria:D

Like new was my criteria, unmolested, and totally original, which is why it probably took me 3 years to find it........
