Worth buying?

Hi all, I have been recently looking at discovery 2’s and was wondering if it’s worth it? It would have to be my daily driver (15 min commute to and from work) and then have fun on green lanes and byways on the weekend. I’ve heard lots of problems with them needing constant maintenance and replacement parts. I wouldn’t be doing anything too technical byway or Green lane wise. Was just looking from some feedback from people who use one for this purpose before I open my wallet.

Well as long as you have a healthy bank balance and willing to spend time looking after the disco, I cannot see a issue. Remember the vehicle is old enough to fall to bits before your eyes in all departments.

I'm on my 2nd one as a daily driver. Paid good money for it tho, low mileage well kept etc

Great daily drivers, as above keep on top of maintenance.

My son uses his as a daily driver.
Of course it will go wrong like any other old car, well to be fair it will go wrong more than most other cars.
You will need to learn to fix it yourself most likely.

Not a bad motor if you don't pay too much.
I much prefer the V8s to the diesels, but that is just a personal preference.
All the common faults are fixable, although any with severe rust should be rejected.
Also give any that have been heavily modified for "Orf Road" a swerve.
Check VED costs carefully. Some models have stupid expensive tax, others don't, this should be reflected in the purchase price, but sometimes isn't.
Parts are all available, plenty of older ones around, lots of help on the forum, what's not to like?

As I have said before on this media! There is nothing on this vehicle that you can not do yourself or with friends with a bit more knowledge than yourself! And your willing to learn 'How To'!!?? And get your hands dirty?

The Disco 2 was a mass market family 4x4 designed to be used daily..... a 15min commute should be no issue. Off road they are fine and can be modded, although on the larger side for some tight lanes.

Do be aware, the youngest D2 will now be 19 years old. So it is more about running an upmarket semi luxury 4x4 of that age. Overall they are pretty easy to work on, but they do have some advanced technology too. So things can and will need attention, but probably no more than any other comparable vehicle of the same era. Really rust is the biggest bane on the chassis.

Worth doing your research and knowing how they are built and what they can do. Buy an unloved one and it could cost you big. Bit a tidy one shouldn't really be that much of an issue.

Avoid the silver ones, they tend to rust worst.

I would disagree that they need “constant” maintenance. In fact whoever told you that is talking bollocks. They are old cars now, but how many other makes are still running well after over 20 years ?? Mine has a few electrical issues, but still runs like a Swiss clock and is a treat to drive. In fact, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, I’m thinking of selling it

For an old nail that I paid 1200 quid for, mine was pretty reliable to be fair.
I had it a bit more than 3 years, and only did about 10k miles in that time.
But the only things that packed up were a belt idler, which cost about 20 quid all in, and I put a new belt on, although the old one looked OK. And the windscreen cracked, which can happen to any vehicle, I got one fitted for £120 by a local windscreen bloke.
Other than that, it was just oil and filters.
After that, I sold it and got £750.
