Won't stay in first gear

97 300tdi manual disco 1 - Got the usual crunches etc which I manage using extra revs so it slots in ok.
Main problem is that it pops out of first : last winters snow and ice meant going down my road was a first gear crawl with parked cars either side, 2nd meant i was going to fast to stop. If I accelerated or kept the power on it stays in first, but this means I speed up (not good in the conditions) If i let the engine do the breaking it slips out into neutral after a few seconds.
Any ideas what the problem / solution is ? I have searched but most problems seem to be actually getting it in gear, not popping out !

probably worn dog teeth on 1st gear once thay have lost enough theres no shape left to hold in gear on overrun ,possible too much free play in gear but not likely if everyother gear seems fine

In the bad weather are you using your low range gears? If no try it.

3rd low is roughly equivalent to 1st high.

Could use low box I guess for my road - main roads always clear, sides road never cleared in Sheffield.
James - is this a gear box out /mechanic job or enthusiastic amateur job?

no, seriously, getting a land rover gearbox out is not dificult, it's big heavy work, but easier than working on the vast majority of modern front wheel drie stuff.

getting the box out isnt too bad with engine crane through door and chain etc through hole in tunnel fastened to rh side top stud holding t/box to g/box hangs level but front heavy ,box stripping and rebuild is probably best with someone with the tools if you get it out and bring it to me i will do it with you for cost of parts and a beer
