winch

not sure about this i am just starting off roading and wanting a winch !!
trouble is what one there are loads to choose from, so i,m after a bit of advice
what should i look for ??
make etc motor size
or what ones to avoid ??

if not an 8274 (which is the be all and end all of winches) then i'd say look for winches with the bulky gearbox.

there seems to be two different types - those with a chunky stepped gearbox and those with a narrower straight sided gearbox.

i bought a superwinch 10000lb for 318 becuase of the name, turns out it was a cheap chinese just with the superwinch sticker

i could have got a cheap brand 12000lb (with the bigger gearbox) and a synthetic rope for the same price. that was about 14 months ago btw.

I was thinking of my pocket i don't really want to spend more than the cost of my disco!:doh::doh:

get a hand winch then.

as i said, more spend = more good.

If money is tight the general advice from those in the know, is buy a second hand DECENT WINCH rather than a new Piece-o-crap Chinese thing...

Now firstly I want to say that I want to trick my Disco out however...........

I have been green laning for a few years now and so far I have not gotten a winch. Someone told me ages ago
1) You buy a winch not to get into trouble but to get out of it when it bites you in the arse unexpectedly.
2) If you know your route then you should be fine
3) Walk what you can't see especially before you commit. This saved me getting stuck in the forest!!!

Finally I have a standard 200TDi and it is amazing where you can go with the right techniques. All the big wheels, chassis and body lifts, winches and HD bumpers are great and YES I want them all but they can't take you further unless you have the initial skills and experience to make the best use.

Finally on winches - the guys here are all right, buy second hand kit and you will end up with better quality than new cheap crap because when you do need it you want to make sure it will work after sitting on the bumper unused for 8 months!!

No, My superwinch has plenty of pull even on it's third wrap without a snatch, and has pulled me out of some deep holes when loaded to the gunnels with kit, it's never failed me or anyone else i've pulled out of the mire! Some would say it's underpowered at 9500lb, I'd disagree.

superwinch gets a bad name for selling re-branded chinese ****.

like i said, yu might aswell buy chinese **** and save money. i learnt the hard way.

thats not to say the chinese **** is ****, just doesnt stand up to the sort of use a competition or working vehicle gives it, day in, day out. the sort of thing you'd expect from a superwinch.

thats not to say all superwinch is ****, husky for example is a bad boy winch at a bad boy price.

and the RAC/AA have superwinch hydraulics on all their trucks, its industry standard in my opinion.

just a shame the tainted the cheaper end of the market by rebranding. not even the control switch is improved quality, i had to replacfe mine after it jammed up after about 3 weeks.

mine is working beautifully at 14 months old, but it ony gets used once or twice a month...

I had very bad luck with my lower and mid range supers,all 3 of them. I guess you get what you pay for and what I paid for was a collection of plastic gears and pot metal. Mind you,the last one was bought a while back....I sold the lorry it was on 6 or 7 years ago. I have seen the higher end ones used on fleet vehicles and the drivers I have asked said they were on the whole very good.
But.....if you are going to spend top money I would have thought that a more consistant brand a better choice....one with the after sales service and parts availability that I DIDNT get with Superwinch.Things may well have changed,but if the product is going to be a made in china generic re badge....well,enough said.

yep, as baove, mines been fine, but i wouldnt buy a superwinch again. i feel like ive been lead up the garden path a bit.

if you buy chinese you expect chinese. i didnt.

i dont know what i would buy next tbh. 8274 is still over my budget

well i thought my superwinch was made in the USA, I'm gonna check the plate. If it's rebranded chinese, then i'm with you Noisy.

perhaps it depends on the age cake man. i mean, you expect superwinch to be quality, and my money is on the older stuff being **** hot. i know my mate has got one that would pull a house down.

far too powerful for landrover use, we have to chain it to a tree cos the 90 just skids along!

they have definitely gone to china for the budget range - which takes the biscuit. whats the point in buying a superiwinch if its just a china winch underneath?
