Good winch for the price, have done some monster pulls both in length and weight and its never let me down. It's not the quickest under load but that sometimes can be better, depending on what your doing. Lovely positive action on the free spool, very easy to run out and a good strong brake on it too,waterproof enough as far as I can see, mine has been submerged on numerous occasions and worked fine both under water and out.

There is a lot of bull**** pointless snobbery when it comes to winches,I grant you if you are doing competition winch challenges then spending on the best gear is warranted, but for most pay and play and hobbyist off roaders who might use the winch a few times each outing, I just can't see the justification of spending so much cash.

I use mine about 3-5 times a weekend and am out almost every weekend so maybe 100 pulls a year, And its still going strong.

I've seen on other threads that you use yours and maintain it well, the problems start when there sat for long periods of time and not lucked after

Thats another question maintaining it , the way my bumper is im going to have to fit it behind the grill and cut some off it out to get to the clutch lever aswell , the 9500 should hopefully be enough the 11500 is way out the budget , i know im ment to clean the cable but is there anything else ill proberly be using it once or twice a month

Don't send it swimming voids the warrenty, and use it, even if not for pulling someone out just free spool the rope off and back on again to keep it moving, most fail due to the winch and solinoid been full of rust and mud

You joke about that, but in summer when mine doesn't get so much use, that is exactly what I do but I use the mother in laws car, winch lines need to be spooled on under tension, recently started to make a game of it with the lad and his quad, I hook him up and he whizzes the line out on free spool,I then clean the drum and coat with oil, he hooks up the car and we drag that across the garden whilst I redress the line and lubricate it as it comes back in.

Makes the world of difference for when your really need it.

As a side point, is making your winch more secure not going to increase the chances of your vehicle being stolen? If they REALLY want the winch and can't just unbolt it, will they not just take your vehicle?

Jarre that was said before , considering my doors are a bit dodgy . First time ive ever done this but last weekend in town "stockport" i a main carpark i accidently left the drivers door open , literally open about 30cm
Went shopping ect an hour or so , walking back noticed it, ran over expecting my sterio cb ect to be gone , but was untouch was really lucky tbh , in another note , what oil do you use po? And how do u apply it on a rag ? Spool it in holding a wet oily rag? Would that work ?

I use the cheapest engine oil i can find, usually a bit of a mix of my own universal lubricant which consists of all the dregs from oil containers, usually only new oils but if you have some used engine oil that isnt too dirty, may be from a petrol car rather than a diesel, chuck some of that in the mix.

i think right now the mix is 15% ep90, 50% 10/40 semi synth, 20% 15/40 mineral, 15% some other random oil. Its more a case of doing it right when you get the winch new if you are keeping the steel line then before you use it make sure it is well soaked and covered in oil, it stops sh1t getting into the line and abrading it from the inside, prevents rust forming on the line and helps it bend and resists kinks a little better.

I use a 2-3 inch paint brush dipped in a pot of oil and liberally painted on each layer as it is spooled in, as for the oily rag in your hand yes it will work but ffs watch the line for steel strands sticking out.

When i did my first spool on of the line i used the weight of the disco on a slight hill to ensure it went on under tension, imo this is really important if you dont use enough tension then if you do a pull with say 2 wraps of the drum still on the line will pull through the wraps and become jammed up, a proper pain in the arse and bad for the line.

That was lucky, especially in Stockport!

mine came from a friend of a friend took it off his recovery truck, maybe try calling a few recoverytruck refub places? or i use gumtree alot

Id buy a better second hand winch rather than a cheap Chinese one brand new if it was my money.

Like thems said, if your going to use it occasionally then no need for an 8274.

Saying that, i know people with cheap Chinese winches that work year in year out, they just maintain them.

fact of the matter is that no machine likes to sit idle, they all need use - ask anyone who's bought a "lifestyle" disco and then tried to engage the diflock.

and again I've done cheapy chinese winches (2 off em) and had little luck with either, so I bit down on it and picked up an ex tow truck 8724, had to do a bit of maintenance on it but.... you get what you pay for.

I removed a warn xd9000 from the front and fit a modified 8274 its like day and night the diffrence in performance, I have now got the xd9000 in the rear.

Like ginge says, if I had to buy another and had £300 to spend I would buy a second hand warn or huskey or the likes rather than a £300 shiney Chinese one,

My version of security was free quick and easy, let a couple foot out and wrap the wire around the winch couple times and hook it to the frame and then winch it in and watch it all tighten up solid and then i removed the 4 bolts and that isnt going any were fast
