Hi there.

My J reg 1991 defender has got an electric problem. The side lights wont turn off. I have tried taking the fuses out and that turns the right side lights off but the left ones stay on. What is odd is that it takes two fuses to get the right hand side lights to work and the left wont turn off what ever i do ( apart from removing battery)

Anyone got any idea where or how i can find the fault? Not sure if it is related but think it might be.... It has been raining hard for the last week. Maybe water has caused the problem?

Thanks for any help.

George

George...............I suggest that you buy a new switch assembly and fit it to the steering column. Check all the main earth connections, in particular the two between the Chassis and the battery, chassis to engine.

Thanks for all the help, your right I have posted it before, thought I solved it last year with a new switch but now same problem. But the lights stay on when the switch is take out.

I'll keep trying.

Ok this may be because you have a wiring fault with the electrics coming into the vehicle. I had a fault which caused an engine fire. Luckily I had a spanner for the battery and a fire extinguisher to hand.

You have a Perm Live short somwhere. Check the alternator main feed wire that runs from the alternator to the starter main terminal. This runs with ign feed wires. I doubt it will be here but check that its not shorting out as this could consume your vehicle. This wire on my mota had came unclipped from the black plastic clips located at the rear of the engine.

This caused the wire to drop and over a period of time wear through the sleeving causing a direct live short to all the ignition and lights.

Also check the feed wires from the back of the fuse box these have a tendancy to melt together if somone has used existing wiring to run extra lights in the past.

A test lamp is your friend you need to test the fuse box and then move to the switch and try and find a live feed thats shorted. If your not happy with a test lamp or meter then pay somone on ere a few beer tokens or an auto sparks £££ to sort it. Failing that learn to use a test lamp

p.s if one bulb is always illuminated without the fuse fault lies betweenbulb and supply wire. You may find you have more than one fault.

At last a helpful reply, issue sounds more serious than I thought. Was looking for at wiring tonight and couldn't see any. The back of the fuse box seems fine. When I was checking the wiring the problem seemed to be getting worse. The rear window wipers came on and the same problem, take the fuse out and doesn't stop it. Then the rear fog lights came again bypassing the fuses. Any clues as to where the short could be happening? Or could it be anywhere? Wondered if all of these things are close together or some other connection?

Thanks again

Check loom as it enters and exits the righthand chassis front and rear- also the body seam behind rear lights saws through loom- if like mine the loom has wiper park wire and lights sawn through the lights will remain on with light fuses removed.

Check your earths as it sounds as though you are getting a back feed from somewhere.

Check all the connections to both positive and earth with a test lamp to see if you can identify it.
