Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to give me some advice!

I have had my '98 diesel freelander for just over 6 months. Since then i have had 4 tyres & a new exhaust.

But my current problem started about a month ago, i had a very bad rumbling noise which was diagnosed as the Viscous coupling so i put on a complete prop shaft.
Now i have a whining noise which doesnt get louder as i go faster but only starts at about 30mph. Also i have jacked all 4 wheels of the floor and run through the gears and NO noise.

Any help would be much apprciated as my cars been off the road for over a month and my local garage cant figure out what it is!

(P.S the IRD was replaced a year ago!!!)

Thanks Kris

Did they change the propshaft bearings as well when they done the prop?
And what tyres are you running?
Mine whines a bit from the rear and i just change the wheels left to right and that seems to cure it..the tyres on mine michelins seem to suffer from a bit of castellation and changing them seems to work..
Hope this helps
D

Have you changed the tires since the viscous was changed?? A buggered viscous casues the rear tyres to where in a saw tooth manner on th einside edge (run your hand around it and you will be able feel big steps). Even if you had a new IRD, if you have run arounf for 12 months with a knackered viscous, chances are your RD will be buggered again. Saying thatan IRD doesn't whine, it knock. Could be a rear wheel bearing (similiar sound to tyre wear). Rear diff bearings could be shot also. Viscouse centre bearings could also be worn. Send me a PM if you want any more info.

Had a similar problem with whining noise.... put new tyres on and problem solved. Careful examination of tyres will show sawtooth effect, especially on outer edges. Also some flat spots on tread... these were original Michelin fitted to the vehicle. If possible swop wheels with another vechicle to test to see if this is the problem before buying new tyres .
