Hi all,

Registered a while back but not been on for a while.

Looking for replace our Jimny (55 reg, 23k miles) - yes it looks daft but it's flipping good off road and reliable.

Anyway the family is getting bigger (currently on 2 yr old and a black lab, another baby in Feb) so we will probably need more room although our other car is an estate "normal" car (BMW 335d Touring).

Must be able to tow our boat fine off slippery beaches (500kgs inc trailer), not break down too often and keep the rain out.

Looked at the Freelander but it's just a bit "soft" - the BM does the "luxury" and distance bit fine. Keep coming back to the Defender as I've driven them 1000s of miles for various jobs.

Anyway I'm a sucker for V8s - is it worth looking at them or are they just silly? 50th anniversary with the 4 litre V8 looks good but possibly only in 90 (we'll probably need a 110). We'll do very few miles in it so mpg not an issue.]

If the V8 really is silly, is the 300TDI really much better than the Td5 as I've heard?

Budget is probably up to about £15k.

Nene Overland look like they have good stock but a LONG way from here (Cornwall) - anywhere else I should look?

I utterly love this one but again it's a 90 - anyone squeezed two baby seats and a dog into the back of a 90?!

Nene Overland 4x4 Land Rover Defender 90 new and used for sale

Cheers all!

Cheers hammo - that ebay one looks pretty good!

I've seen a 50th Anniversary V8 one for around £9k with just over 100k miles on Autotrader but with a gas conversion (assume that means LPG?!). Possibly worth a look?

I get the feeling Nene probably charge a bit more than most. If anyone knows any other decent websites/dealers, especially in the SW, I'd be keen to hear!

Know about Roger Young (inlaws had three Defenders from him many years ago) but didn't know about the other one - a few decent ones there - cheers!

Pink seats though?!

I have a feeling that would be a wee bit needy maintenance wise and still less bhp and torque than our "family estate" car ;-)

The search begins - think we might up the budget and go for a 110 County or XS 2.4TDCi station OR utility wagon as we need "proper" back seats so we can secure baby seats (one two year old, another due soon).

How hated is the new engine? More than the Td5?

Buy a 110 with a knackered engine but mint chassis they pay someone to whack a huge (6.2, 6.6?) GMC V8 auto in it and put new axles on it. That's what I'd be doing if I had more than 5k to spend on mine.

The new engine is pretty much the same as the one used in the Ford Transit van. There were some problems with it, as well as with the new 6 speed gearbox, but these were quite early on and most will have been rectified by now. The TD5 is a fine engine, and works very well in the 110.

Something like this?

If you've set your heart on a v8 then theres probably not going to be any turning back but if there is still a little doubt in your mind, consider a diesel because it'l wade better, and since you are going to use it to drop down a boat this may come in useful some day.. It's probably sensible if it's going in water (especially the sea or salt water) to get one with a well looked after underbody.

If you get a 2009 onwards 110 utlility its been reclassed as a commercial and its onlt 200 quid a year to tax. You get your family seats, nice load area too!

(More than 15k but an investment if look after)

imho they are shyte mate the td5 is far better and much more room in the front than the transit engine/mondeo g/box
mate of mine that works in a local stealers says there is a very real design fault with the clutch on the tdci has had 1 perticular 110 csw that he has replaced 5 or 6 clutches in less than 2 years
even though i have had my share (or more than, sometimes i think) ups and downs with my td5's i love the motor and that sound imho is as good as a v8 ;)
