I'm sure a lot of you saw my other thread about getting screwed over by my dealer after ordering a new Defender. Anyway, I'll deal with them when I have some more time on my hands, but for now I need to find a new truck!

So here are the Defenders that I've found in my search. Obviously nobody can make the decision for me, but you're all a lot more experienced when it comes to these matters than me, so I would value some input. While going through the list, keep in mind that the truck is going to get completely prepped for overland after purchase. I'll be heading into Africa for a while and then continuing to Asia and around the rest of the world. I prefer left hand drive and a utility, also I probably won't be able to live with white or black, which means that a lot of these will need a paint job. Also I won't mount a wheel on the bonnet or have a roof rack. Originally I wanted a brand new truck, but I'm considering that the benefit of owning something like a 300 TDI that can be fixed on the road in Africa might outweigh a new Puma that is too electronic. From what I've read, and I don't want this to become strictly a "which engine" thread, the TDI engines are favoured by most, slightly followed by the TD5 and the Pumas are nice and comfortable, but too computerized. Anyway, the engine is a big part of the decision, so please let me know how much it's weighed in on your selection, but try not to get carried away in debate here.

So, put yourself in my shoes. You're looking for the IDEAL overland vehicle/home before heading into Africa. All of the ones on the list below are affordable options (Obviously I want to pay as little as possible, but these are all in the range). I put some notes below each one to let you know what I'm thinking. Which would you choose?

Much appreciated!

Land Rover Defender 110 Utlity Station Wagon | eBay

Utility which is a big plus, I like the colour. I'm assuming it's a 2.4puma? He doesn't actually mention. 27k miles isn't low, but it's not unreasonable. I would prefer if it didn't have the tow package as I'd feel better about it being "lightly" used. Other than painting the wheel arches/roof I don't think the exterior needs any superficial work. I'd give this one an 8/10 in my eyes. 21, 240 asking price

2012 12 Land Rover Defender 110 2.2d XS 5 Doors | eBay

Utility which is a big plus. 2.2puma I have a love/hate thing with black though, so I would probably have the truck wrapped. Black looks mean, but I hate photographing it and I'd really like to have a truck that I'm happy taking pictures of as I travel. It's essentially brand new 300+ miles, owner decided to get a 90 instead apparently. Spec isn't far off from what I originally ordered. Waiting on a final price, listed at 26,000 + VAT

Nene Overland 4x4 Land Rover Defender 110 new and used for sale

300 TDI which is a plus. Seems to not have been tampered with and also left hand drive which I really like. Would need a new bonnet, wheels and a paint job though as I don't like white. 30k miles isn't too bad. Asking 19,000

4:
Nene Overland 4x4 Land Rover Defender 110 new and used for sale

300 TDI is a plus. 22k miles isn't bad at all. Would need to get painted and new wheels. asking 20,000

Nene Overland 4x4 Land Rover Defender 110 new and used for sale

300 TDI is a plus. 10k kilometers is great. Has fridge, underbody protection and some electronic/battery work already done. Needs new bonnet, paintjob. Roof rack would come off anyway. asking 24,000

6:
2011 (61) LAND ROVER DEFENDER 110 2.4d UTILITY WAGON | eBay

Utility is great. 2.4puma engine. Color is good. 8.5k miles isn't bad. Needs wheels and a painted roof. asking 20,000

7:
2006 (56) Land Rover Defender 110 TD5 Diesel County Station Wagon | eBay

TD5 isn't bad. 3.3k miles is great. Description seems very confident about how great of shape it's in. Needs wheels and a paintjob. asking 20,000

8:
Nene Overland 4x4 Land Rover Defender 110 new and used for sale

300 TDI which is already prepped by Nene. 54k kilometers is a bit much. Most of the things I would change, but things like suspension/snorkel/fridge/wheels are already done which is nice. Would need to be painted though. Also the roof rack/tent and a lot of the stuff inside could be sold afterwards. asking 25,000

2.4puma, utility is great. good color. Would prefer without the towing package as the 24k miles would feel like less if it wasn't used for towing. asking 20,000

So, that's what I've found. Which would you choose in my position and why? Also, if anybody knows of something that fits into what I'm obviously looking for and I seem to have missed, feel free to let me know.

Once I narrow it down to about 3 of them I will get a little more serious about researching them and get some kind of inspection or try to find some local guys to help me check it out.

THANK YOU,

Tony

tbh I think you have answered it yourself.... so you need to decide.

I wouldnt touch any from nene overland personally but that said I would favour them to an eBay one.

1/. Sold as seen! I wonder why it has had 2 owners in 3 years and is sold 'as seen'!
2/. You should get a full warranty with this one
3/. 4/. 5/. 8/. By all accounts so far, Nene have not done anyone any favours!
6/. Sounds OK and could well be worth a look
7/. Do you want rear side windows?
9/. Could be worth a look.

I know that this is probably of no help at all, but ... At the end of the day, the choice is yours!

Have you ruled out buying an older one with say a galved chassis for 4-6k and then chucking a few k at a garage to replace anything that needs doing?

Not sure about the resale value, but at least the chassis would be ok :p

Got mine from Nene.
If I ever get another LR I will get it from Nene again.
Really helpful.

I don't think I'd be too keen to take anything too fancy to Africa on the grounds that it'll be a target for thieves. Get some beat up old job that's mechanically sound and spend what you save on a decent alarm/immobilizer.

sounds to me like your minted so why not just get a rangey sport and a chauffeur :D

by the way, I haven't read your post cos it was soooo long, but it seems you've pretty much answered your own question. so why not ask us a relevant question like what tyres should u fit...
