Probably a question that's a bit stupid but my td4 has got a factory fitted (I think) body kit on it which means that the wheel arches 'stick out' more - if I fitted bigger wheels this would 'fill the space' a bit more but I am not sure if there would be any downsides to having bigger wheels - apart from more expensive tyres? Someone told me that they would give better road holding and someone else told me it would be not as good as the 16's. Can anyone advise?

I have original 17's with 225 tyres on mine and yes the roadholding is better. Probably some downsides to that if off roading much.

When you say "bigger" - do you mean wide tyres or larger diameter wheel?

It's a "softroader" not a sports car - you don't really need wider than the 215 fitted on the 16" rim

In fact, narrower than that is better in the snow etc

and... the actual footprint is not much different overall

If you go larger like 17" rims, then you are into lower profile tyres which will give a harsher ride on the road and don't have enough sidewall structural flex for departing from tarmac (like potholes and up kerbs :D )

Guy that did the work has 18" something or others - we got to chatting and he took them off his FL1 when he sold it. So I was asking him about wheel size and he said they gave better road holding whereas the guy I get tyres from suggested steer clear as they only cost more money and dont improve anything but the look.

Oh and why is Storm99 finding the question amusing? Tried Giggle but got better results with Google!
Did I not ask using the 'correct terminology? What can I say - I'm only a dumb-ass female, not blond else I would have an excuse, just a little naive and relatively new to the world of cars and all things mechanical.
My freelander isn't used for off-roading but for towing horses and getting around farm tracks and putting jetskis in and out the water.
So thanks to Mark and K5ive for constructive info/advice - it seems like I should just stick with what I have and maybe get them tarted up a bit: Storm - try and get out more!

Storm is a trator boy....anything but a disco or defender for off roading tickles his funny bone.
The largest wheels/tyres that the freelander came with as standard were 18 inch with 235/18/50 these were on the freelander sport (that should set storm off again).
The sport had slightly shorter/ stiffer springs on it than the standard freelander and the combination gave it great handling characteristics for on road use.

Tosser!
Keep going - you will soon have enough words to make up a whole sentence! The rest of us can help you with the grammar and the spelling :der:

Thanks mjr - it's helpful for me to learn these things and reassuring that I can ask on here and get good guidance too.

Oh get a grip 'caz'..if you want to discuss grammar then lets start with your name. It was a lighthearted comment and if you can't take a joke then bugger off. Did I get offended at the tractorboy comment? Not at all. Its banter, there's lots here. Owning a freelander really ought to have given you a sense of humour, it seems not.

Cazb - 'discuss'.........

I don't believe I said I was offended - was just a question! Am quite aware of the 'banter' that goes on here - you say giggle I say google, you say titter I say tosser! = banter!!:boxing:

No Worries.
A bit of abuse is the norm on here, your going to have to get used to it and just learn to give as good as you get and take it as tongue in cheek.
If you let them know they're getting to you they'll just crank it up, besides most of them actually do know what they're talking about and will give good advise ......when they can be bothered!

Thank you Storm99 for your wise advice - I will take heed and stick, as far as possible, to the tarmac! but that explains it - hormones?

Like I said - no plans for off-roading as such unless related to farm tracks and horseboxes but you never know.

And I'm trying to get my sense of humour round the banter once I find out who the chief protagonists are

And a reasonable 18inch tyre will set you back between £150 -£200 each corner, you will also always have to buy a pair and always put the new ones on the rear or you'll knacker your drivetrain

hmmmm farm tracks and hoss boxes...... your not a friend of bluebell are ya?

I think that was what my tyre man said! But these wheels looked nice :p Anyway who will see them when they are covered in horse and cow ****? So what is the point really!! I will only feel obliged to wash them more often!

To be fair your freebie will handle any green lanes without a problem, they do not however have the best reputation offroading, which is a different event completely and not what the freeby was designed for.

Chief protagonists, no idea. I'm not here much.
