I hope you are only trying to get the locking nut caps off. These are the ones with dimples in them. The others just need the wheel brace over the caps to get them off.

These are the one which go over the wheel nut itself. They are bigger that the wheel brace. I was going to put a large socket over but didnt want to cause any damage.

I want to get the wheels off and have then re-dressed, they are bit tatty in places

sounds like you have corroded wheel nuts. corrosion gets between the nut which is mild steel and the chrome cap (swelling the cap to more than 27mm) which incidently is not removable. the nut underneath is 26.5mm the cap making it up to 27mm. one nut cap has an indentation on the face ,this is the only cap that is removable as it covers the locking nut. hope this helps.

I have had a hell of a job getting these off... the tyre place I went to had to hammer the socket over the caps to get it on; I presume they were using a 27mm. When I later serviced the car myself, the wheel brace in the car was very difficult to get on and when I tried to undo the nut using an extension bar over the wheel brace it bent the wheel brace! Again I went to a tyre dealer to remove the wheels and they scratched their head a bit before hammering a 27mm onto it. I decided to get my own socket and ended up with a 28mm hex because it was the only one I could get on over any of the caps. If I use this, is it likely to cause irrepairable damage to the caps does anyone think? I couldn't find a 27mm that would fit all of them. I'm guessing this is the corrosion problem mentioned above.

just rip them off by what ever means you can, there are only a couple of quid to replace off ebay.
