I'm still struggling with this bugger,

I've checked the races are in the hub as far as they'll go but how big a gap should there be between the races? as my stub axle just doesn't appear long enough for them to fit.

YAAAAYYYY all sorted!

I kept on looking at it and realised that the old race was still attached to the stub axle  (welded on more like) to the point that it looked like an integral part.

so after some grinding, hammering and a fair share of swearing it's all back together and feels great to drive :D

thanks for all the advice and now you can laugh at my stupidity. ;)

im not going to laugh mate, first time i didone i had to double take, just shows how well theyre machined cos you cant see a gap!

I think that's why I love fixing it myself, every time I do something I learn a lot about it.....including what not to do next time .

and I'm chuffed it's all fixed and only cost me £23 and half a tub of grease.

I nearly said yesterday make sure you dont have this bit left from the old bearing on the shaft. Wish I had now

I did mine last weekend and I got mine off with a grinder, grinding it paper thin and then it split easy with a chisel.

Hopefully others will learn from our mistakes, I over tightened mine to get the circlip back on and they made a terrible noise until slackened off again and then the circlip went back on easy as they must have settled in.

I wish you'd said that yesterday anorl :( it was driving me mad till I looked at it this morning with fresh eyes and realised what a numptie I'd been

I'm defo gonna learn from this mistake though, so that's a positive thing to come from a frustrating situation.

Horse: if you can't get the circlip back on, screw a drive member bolt into the end of the shaft and pull it out. Tightening the bearing will make about half a mm of difference whereas the shaft will simply pull out about 5mm!
