FFS why bother with following rules on fill levels for the gear box, ird n diff when the main stealers just throw in as much as they want.
All of mine had way too much in and wer'e not talking seconds to get to level it was more like 1 to 2 minutes before they levelled out.
I had an oil leak around the ird and since draining and refilling it's been perfect...i should of collected the oil and measured how much over filled they were.
I'm assuming over filling is not good for seals?

Had a main dealer over fill me ird and rear diff too. they did it to see if the whine would go away, but didn't tell me. I found out when I removed the filler plugs meself.

yeah tossers.....my rear diff wasn't too bad but the ird must have been nearly full to the brim......it's gotta cause a pressure problem?

oh and I nearly forgot one main stealer told me to fill the manual gear box with auto fluid....that can't be right?

Not sure about pressure. The ird has a breather on it. Not sure about auto oil in a manual either. I always use the version that the manufacturer quote, as I don't know betterer.

I sent my oil off for testing. Came back as having a high level of phosphorus in it, which is when they put in additives. Fekin nobs.

Here you go. From the rave disk:

Engine oil - Td4 engine
Use a 10W/40 or 15W/40 oil meeting both ACEA A3
and ACEA B3 specifications, and having a viscosity
band recommended for the temperature range of
your locality. Where oils to these Land Rover and
European specifications are not available, well
known brands of oils meeting API SH quality should
be used.

Engine oil - K1.8 engine
Use a 10W/40 oil meeting specification ACEA A2
and having a viscosity band recommended for the
temperature range of your locality. Alternatively, a
10W/40 engine oil meeting specification ACEA A1
can be used.

Engine oil - KV6 engine
Use a 10W/40 oil meeting specification ACEA A2
and having a viscosity band recommended for the
temperature range of your locality.

Gearbox oil
Use of gearbox oils other than those specified may
result in serious damage to the gearbox.

Manual Gearbox - PG1 and Getrag
Use Texaco MTF 94 oil or Burmah Oil MTF 1067 plus
OPEL B 0400063 for refill or topping-up.

Automatic Gearbox - JATCO
Use Texaco N402 fluid or equivalent for refill or
topping-up.
Note: You can top up your auto box oil. Just make sure you do it correctly. Instructions on this site if you search for it.

Intermediate Reduction Drive
Factory Fill: Texaco S5 75W90; Specification: API
GL5

Rear Differential
Factory Fill: Texaco Multigear 80W-90 ETL 7441;
Specification: API GL5

Gear linkage - Manual
Use grease Part No. AFU 1500 containing 3%
Molybdenum Disulphide.

General Greasing
Use Multipurpose Lithium Base Grease NLGI
consistency No. 2.

Bonnet latch
Lubricate cable and latch with oil.

Locks, Latches and Hinges
Use Door Lock and Latch Lubricant, Part No. CYL
100020.

Cheers hippo, Some of them are usefull....I totally ignored the tosser from landrover and used the specified oils according to rave anyway, i'd just like to know why they would even suggest using auto fluid in a manual box:confused:.....maybe I should e-mail him and ask.....if he's still there.

That would probably result in a blank mate, as I'm pretty sure that he would deny it. If he didn't deny it and someone elce read it, he would be ripped to **** by everyone at the dealer! Some people should never touch, or advise, on car maintenance!

Changing oils and filters was always the job for the new starters/apprentices when I started as a mechanic many years ago (including a LR dealer) leaving the technical tasks/defects for the skilled mechanic, unless trainees are properly supervised cock ups will usually happen.

"i'd just like to know why they would even suggest using auto fluid in a manual box."

Not as stupid as if first sounds.
On a 90/110 for instance ATF is the recomended oil for the main gearbox. Not saying he was correct about the Freelander but it does happen.

mtf is not to different from atf in lt77s and r380s both run well on either ,thinner oils are better for transferring heat so cool better which is more of an issue on more powerful fast vehicles and are able to be pumped around box

This was the guy's email.

*Hi Matthew,
The fuel filter is WJN000080, retail £18.69, our price £14.11. The total price for the service kit, fuel filter and postage would be £95.57 inc vat.
As for the oil it would be better and cheaper if you sourced that locally. Our IRD oil is £19.36 a litre and gearbox oil, which is auto transmission fluid even though it's a manual, is £12.00 a litre. This would have to be couriered as hazardous material, the surcharge for that plus the weight of the oils would make postage costs horrendous!*

The guy worked for Hunters

you can buy atf for less than £3 a litre and 80w90 mfor the same there is nothing apart from brgs and gears that need any special additive ,seals in diffs ,ird ,gear box are std ,changing oil regulary with good cheap oil is better than leaving exspensive synthetic in for a long time ,even though synthetic will maintain lubrication ,contaminents are still better removed

Have to admit he's right about the hazard postage cost. You can't post stuff wiff lead acid batteries in, for example, wiffout telling em. Although I know of someone that does it on a regular basis. Same for oil etc. Was told this by a reliable driver. If the oil were to leak, then they report it to the emergency services. They take a sample for testing, and put the vehicle in quarantine for 24hours. The situation is then dealt wiff. Whilst this may seem over the top to some, they never know what chemicals have been concealed. The shipper gets charged wiff the costs for the above exercise.

£12 for 1L of LRN402 Jatco auto oil is about right, bought from main stealers.

My local main dealer is one of the biggest. They have a lot of apprentices, which do a lot of the work. They’ll typically start off on the easy stuff. Repetitive stuff like a certain lengthy recall will be taught to a few, and they’ll carry this out too, as well as standard servicing. They’re over seen by someone who’s experienced, and knows what’s going on. Hence why the same person always signs off the paperwork fer yer Freelander, each time you go. The other experienced mec’s are used for diagnostic, and complicated stuff.

I think earlier Discos had ATF specified for the manual gear box, some Vauxhalls do to. Maybe the guy was getting confused with the Disco

atf would be more than suitable for manual gear box,its been used in defenders and range rovers too and used and changed yearly keeps gear box clean internally
