What's the difference?

I am very new to the Land Rover Scene. I have just purchased a TD5 and would like to understand what the difference is between the II series Discovery (which i think i have, it's a Y reg) and the 300 series (whick i think was the model before).

They both look the same to me.

Also, i was told that the discovery does not have a cam belt but a cam chain. Is this the case and if so does that mean that the chain does not require replacing like a belt does?

I know nothing about Land Rovers but am eager to learn. I would appreciate your response.

I can't tell you about the cam belt on your's.

However the main difference is there was a complete face lift from the 300 to the TD5, the TD5 has a 5 cylinder engin taken from a BMW i believe. There is also doferences in the body such as the door handles have changed etc.

Hi, if yours is a TD5, then it has the bmw lump specially developed for use in the disco / defender, and instead of a cambelt it has a duplex timing chain which shouldn't cause you any problems, unlike a cam belt which will need replacing every so often otherwise it may snap and do some damage to valves / pistons / cyl head etc. Best Rgds.

And you have much better door handles, mine belong to a fooking Morris Marina..

Could anyone tell me soem of the more meaningful diferences as I am currently about to buy a 300TDi and would like to know what I am missing out on?

the performance of the 200 and 300 is virtually the same. changes were mainly made for emissions regs. in fact the 300 is slower!
engine is virtually the same one but the gearbox is different.

the td5 is very different. bhp is up from 111 to 132 and torque is up from 195 to 232 lb ft. (about the same output as a 4.0 v8 petrol engine).


ps. the name discovery 300tdi does not officially exist!
land rover never used the name.
(it was just the name of the engine).

Someone told me that they altered all of the handeling charcteristics of the td5 along with all sorts o other bits. Is this true and if so exactly what changed? There must be a website with this info on but I can't find it

In Oz, the gearbox has a manual centre diff in the earlier one, whereas the series 11 has all electric. I am told by those in the know that this can cause problems while trying to rock yourself out of a sandy or slushy bog hole, but I havent been able to strand mine yet (perhaps I am not trying hard enough) so I cant say for certain. Suffice to say that the model after (without badge) went back to a manual one!
The Series 11 also has a dicky little Series11 basge to the left of the rear spare.

Which remnids me, I saw a disco in an american tv show the other night and the door seemed to be still mounted on the same side as the right hand drives. That cnat be right can it? Opening onto the road?

Its not a bloody BMW engine - project Storm is Land Rover !!!!! Even the fuel system is Lucas not Bosch.Apparently the only BMW supplied part in a Td5 motor is the camshaft - God knows why ! Sorry to rant but I wont forgive BMW for the c--p way they treated LR.

Yea it's definiteley Storm and it's made in Solihull by Landrover not Germany. Some the parts are still made in Wales and supplied direct to the engine plant, so it must be a good motor. I think the Storm Engine will continue production for another 6 months. They still put it in the Defender I think !

whats this nonsense about a td5 being a bmw engine ???? balls guys ..its a landrover engine through and through ...bmw never made such a thing ..and dont listen to anybody that tells ya they do !

Hey Glyndwr, Some Kiwi's I know say that THEIR Homeland is God's Country; who is right then (stands back and waits for it...........)

if the TD5 is so good, why can my 200TDi pull a trailer with a ton of corn in it up a steep hill in high 2nd, but my mate has to go to low box in his TD5 with the same trailer / load behind?
also, why has he had to replace his engine after only 40k (under warranty) while mine's still going strong on 85k?

Its like all cars/engines, you sometimes get bad ones. For instance I once had a BMW 3 series auto - the gearbox fecked up at 55,000 miles so it put me off automatic BMWs - but they are not all bad!

well as the guy above has pointed out some bad ones happen it just a fact of life. im not saying tdi's are bad mate i have a 300 tdi and its fab but the thing so good about a td5 is that as well as towing ur grain all be it in low range ..given that the ratios of the td5s r380 are different to ur lt77 is acceptable. but u try starting ur tdi on a cold morning and keep up with a td5 on the way to ur work..then u have a point

it always starts instantly, first touch of the key
it will cruise at 70 - if you can stand the vibration and noise from the tyres!
as I drive about 500 miles a week in connection with work, i've got something a bit more refined for daily use. I keep the Defender for evenings and weekends.

yea so will out discovery ..but its slow as hell when its cold ..its just a charactoristic ..the td5 was meant to be a comprimise between on road performance and off road lugging and i think it did its job extremly well
