...and the reason I didn't ask this in the engines forum: which is better?

Put it another way, I'm looking at a 1987 2.5 TD 110 hardtop which, assuming it is the original engine, is advertised as a 2.5 TD - so I assume not a 200 Tdi. Is the 200Tdi any better/more reliable and if so, why?

Cheers!

Yes the 200tdi is superior. The Td was/is famous for its ability to blow up at about 120k miles...the 200tdi has more power and reliability. And costa about a grand or two more.

Interesting...as I am looking at a 110 2.5TD wih 133,000 miles on the clock. Hmm.

When you say 'blow up' what exactly goes on them?

OK, that's not so bad - surely a reconditioned turbo would be a prevantative measure that should ensure reliability for another 50,000 miles or so then?

Failing that, how much work is it to drop a 200 or 300 Tdi lump in there?

all red blocks are prone to heavy bore wear and turbo version also splitting piston crown to ,they arent a patch on 200tdi even though they have served many reasonably well

My td started running rough at 126,000 miles, found all 4 pistons cracked two all the way accros. Was going well until then, now 200.

Google 19j engine problems and prepare for a long read!
'zactly.

I can't believe nobody has said "Search FFS" :p - must be getting mellow in our old age!

Loads of topics on the 2.5TD engine and associated problems. And many more on replacing the 2.5TD with a 200/300 tdi.

Ian.

if we told everyone just to search, it would be pretty boring on here with very few worth while new topics. Give the guy a break he want answers to his question so we give them.

As for the 19j i would'nt but if you like it buy it run it till it blows then drop in a v8

I think that's what I'll do to be honest - buy it, run it until it breaks (or I'm ready to do a big trip), then chuck a Tdi lump in it. Although as many have suggested, finding a good/reliable Tdi lump could be a problem, of course.

Do you think this vehicle is a good buy for the money?
