Hi all,
Im a new member with an old problem ,
Have bought a 88" 1976 series 3 Diesel, done all welding got through MOT just in time for the snow but its very very slow. tried timing the pump but i have no pointer on bell housing. timing marks are 13 and 15 on the flywheel so i believe i time at 13 degrees. it has got two timing marks on bottom pulley with a pointer so i tried those but still crap. The pump has internal markings through window so is of early type not sure on the engine though. engine no 36902300 c it also has a leyland stamp with ERC 4940 on the side. is this a sherpa, Taxi?
I also changed the glow plugs because of starting issues but had to go through boxes of them in my local halfords to match them as they are a much thinner thread than land rover ones. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
oh and HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Slow as in it feels like it's struggling to get going, or slow like it's being held back?
Have you checked the insanely obvious such as:
Is it smoking ? does it smell rich or unburnt at the box ?
Checked the Choke / kill positions
Checked the air filter
Checked the Diesel system is primed properly
Checked the fuel system for blockages / free flow
Checked the lift pump
It's not in Low range ( I've had someone do this !)

Ah no when i say slow i mean holding back can hardly get in forth, and yes have primed fuel checked filter all obvious stuff even checked tappets. yes it does smoke a bit, Blue, so advanced timing a bit today and now its kicking out a bit of black but not holding back so much. I can't advance anymore as its at the end of slots, unless i slip the cog back on the timing gear.
Anyone got an idea on the engine as i thought landy numbers only go up to 366.
Thanks all.

you might have a stretched/worn chain, quite a lot of british stuff come with the old layland L symbol i wouldn't say its not a landy engine it may just be a later replacement (land rover were part of BLG for a while and they loved sticking their stamp on stuff!)

chain wear is pretty common on the 2.25

Sorry - I had to ask ;)
Another Obvious question - Has it been ok up until lately ? Because if it's started recently, then the obvious thing would be to back track... ?

My little book of engine numbers doesn't list any above 366 either...

No i bought in summer, Welded up chassis changed a diff new shoes for hand brake oil seals for drive shaft etc etc MOT'd on road, doh! forgot engine.
Thinking about it now sitting here I think it has the wrong pump, the external pointer is on the block but it has the old style pump with no external marking/notch, but has the viewing window, so i alined mark A with the squared off circlip B as in manual, but without the pointer on the bell housing and assuming the timing mark on pully is13 degrees.

yeh retarded it when i lined up timing marks which made it worse, advanced to max on slots and have more power but still holding back.
i'll have another play with it at the weekend.
thanks all

changed diff its not a 3.5:1 ratio is it instead of a 4.7: a diesel series would struggle to pull 3.5:1 most definatly
