I have seen two Discoveries - One is a late model 300tdi Safari with 99000 miles on it and the other is an early TD5 S with around 130000 miles.
Both are similar money .
Both look tidy .
At the minute , I am leaning towards the Safari but would welcome your opinions.

Seems there is far less to go wrong electronic wise on the 300 I looked at both and went for a 300 TDi in the end, mine still has problems but its 13 years old and its reasonably cheap to fix.

I would be going for the TD5 for one reason only - Rust. It's the Achilles heel of the TDi 300

By comparison to D1, Discovery 2 is a paragon of virtue when it comes to rust.

Yes, owners have had some rust above the windscreen - caused by stones and could/should have been treated. The chassis can show some rust also. But nothing compared to the littany of bodywork repairs required on a D1.

Boot floors; how many boot floors have you heard of being replaced on a D2? Ditto rear wheel arches, inner and outer wings, rear crossmembers and body supports, inner front wings, A & B pillar bottoms.

Come on guys get real - TDi300's are great but rusty, end of.

yep, tdi's go rusty, nice easy thing to fix, rust.

however, ACE, air suspension, complex engines etc etc arn't

tid all the way - nice, simple engineering

As Nigel-S said, what are you going to be using the vehicle for? Mostly on road, with a bit of off roading, I'd go for a Td5. Mostly off road, with a bit of on roading then go for a 300 Tdi. Obviously there are good and bad examples of both. 300s and Td5s have their pros and cons, not just the engine, which have been discussed plenty of times.

I saw a TD5 disco chassis a little while ago that would have collapsed in half had the car not been scrapped, then another 99my car that went in for scrappage as the chassis had a 20x2" hole in it.
The first front to rear brake pipes I did on a D2 were on a 3 yr old car...
Granted in some places the D2 is less prone to rust, but when it gets into them they are not so DIY repairable as the D1.But we need not worry as the D3's seem to be rusting quicker than the other two put together.
