So with the Defender destined for the history books and it's replacement looking like Barbies beach buggy I wonder if this is the end of Land Rover as we know it?

Or maybe the end has already been... There's a bit of a debate around the interwebs over what was the last "proper" Landy, so just for fun, what do you think it was?

I'll try and make the most common suggestions into a poll, this may or may not work...

0: Series I - how could I forget!
1: Early Series IIA - last with lights in the middle
2: Late Series IIA - last with an all metal dash and "proper" windscreen hinges
3: Series III - last leafer
4: Defender 200/300TDI - before electrickery in the engine
5: Defender TD5 - still had vent flaps
6: Defender Puma - still got the looks
7: As long as it's got a green oval it's a "proper" Landy!

Once again, this is just for fun and subject to personal opinion :D

Should have also asked, why?

I think a Landy should take you to the end of the world and back, and be fixed in the middle of nowhere with duct tape and bailing twine... so for me it's the 200/300tdi

Having said that, there's no reason you shouldn't arrive in comfort so the Puma is still in the running, just not convinced about the lack of vents and bonnet hump...

I'd love a Series one, with no roof or door tops and the screen folded down!

Not great for commuting though... :D

I should have added that as an option - how do I amend the poll?

Edit post then advanced options although I'm not sure if you can now people have voted

I'd have voted series one if it was there as I'm using one daily at the minute but had to settle for an early 2.

The Series one is far better built than its younglings, the vent flaps for a start just feel a lot more sturdy, none of this bakelite bollocks just big metal levers

to me, the 2a was the last proper one, as it's simple and all metal, with good metal and galv.

it's tough, 300 90/110 for the engine and bits an bobs, but the quality is crap compared to the 2a

You could argue that apart from the Fender, the P38 was the last proper landie. OK it's a bit plush but it's very capable off road, has beam axles and is cheap and fairly easy to fix.

Could be any.

That said Ford engines make them seem less Land Rover than previous models.

You should have 90/110 as they were more LR than many.

TD5 has slightly too many non LR parts to be as LR as say a 90/110 despite being LR designed.

Anyway I don't like Fords.

When I was a mobile mechanic, a regular customer bought a series ? that I serviced, dont ask me what one, it was the 4cylender petrol one, short wheelbase, with windows and rear seats.
the owner got well and truly robbed by a "specialist" in Ongar, Essex some 35 years ago now I spose..
after a few services I freed of the red rusty leaf springs, stopped the brakes from leaking at the cylenders, and swopped his carb for more modern one at the customers request.

for some reason or another, he wanted to borrow my volvo estate, so I used his series to tow a banger on trailor that weekend...
Of course it towed a couple of tons weight, it even stopped it as well,
but for me, the seat was back as far it would go hitting a bulkhead ?
the bus sized steering wheel was in my lap and other places.......
I was not very happy at all....
So, fast foreward to 2006`ish and I became an owner of a rusty old disco diesel.
spend 3 months under it in the first year of ownership, done 2 cam belt changes since, plus other bits and bobs along the way..
OK compare that rather nicer "looking" series I serviced/borrowed to my now very old disco.....

Disco wins - without electrickery ****es all over the series, BUT, I dont own or love a series,
I own a now not quite so rusty disco and love it..
