Sorry, I disagree with all the above, I've owned several high mileage D3's and the kick the arse of the finest 2 on the market in every way, if the two cars are the same price, either the 2 is mega overpriced or the D3 is stolen!
100% do not opt for the old model, but get the newer car checked by an independent specialist.
Rob.

also its because there more like a car than a landrover

What was your average mpg ?, and what problems, if any !, did you repair yourself ?.

How did you come to own " several " high milage D3,s ?.

In case it may help, 6 months ago I had the same dilemma, and ended buying a 2001 TD5 due to simple reasons:

1) it had ALL the specs I wanted (everything possible). I could not find a later 7seater TD5 with all the specs.
2) it was in good condition (official LR shop gave me peace of mind; although now I am maintaining it at an independent shop specialized in LR)
3) i believed it will be running much better and more solid (and probably with lower costs too) in 10 years time than a D3. And it will be more valued too.
4) I have the option to go a la "Stage 2 Alive Tuning" (I am in the final process, but with one of the 2 truly specialized companies down in Spain)

So far (only 6 months) I am convinced I took the right decision. In a similar way many others have said. I use it daily, and the car is not perfect. But it is little by little improving.

It may be foolish to expect TD5 owners to praise and choose a D3 (which I like a lot for many reasons) but it is also true that TD5 have many things to make your live easy enough, and are tough enough to last long if well maintained.
We shall see in 5 years time where do TD5 and D3 stand in people´s hearts and in the market.

hahahaha ive never heard so much ****, the d3's are depreciating quicker than any landrover on the road and rusting a lot faster 2. thats why they are both at the same price, just looked in LRO and d3s are doing **** money and like i said depreciating faster than a 1.1 saxo. there unreliable and nothing resembles a true landrover

Just got rid of a D3 with FSH 62k on the clock ... bought it for 13k had it Nov 09 until May 10, out of which landrover had it from the end of Nov until 2nd week in April 10 cost me 2k for fuel tank promblem and some eletrical problems that they couldn't get right .... thought fook it sold it for 12k bought a 51 plate TD5 with 80k on the clock for 6500...... runs like a dream couple of minor niggles but easy fix ............. nuf said.

2k for a fuel problem ouch!!! td5 all the way i say, a lot more easy to fix yourself if it goes wrong. i love mine, its good on fuel, loves running on veg oil mix. ive spent around £300 in parts over last few months but they needed doing like hub assy, i converted air springs to coils due to them sagging. still a few bits to do but she runs beautifully. shed load of room, tows 24foot caravan effortlessly.
