What is a CDL ??

Can anyone tell me what a centre differential lock is, where it is and how / why you would use it? I have a 1999 td5 discovery, is this likely to have one?

it locks the differential in the transfer box so both propshafts turn at the same time although dosnt lock the differentail in the axles, your disco wont have it i dont think.

its used when offroad for extra traction

yours wont have one will, utilises the traction control instead.
should have a low box tho.

But it will have the internals in the transfer box for the CDL , just needs the linkage to make it functional.

it could have one if some one's fitted the mod wich aint difficult to do

Hi, If you go on the web and type in, www.discovery.co.uk and look under dif lock on that sitethis may help you, as some early D2s still came with centre diff lock, Hope this helps Regards Clive.

Thank you chaps, traction control - that makes sense. I was wondering why earlier discos had diff lock and the TD5 did not.
To be honest - I have never taken a four wheel drive off road yet and probably wont be unless anyone knows of a " soft roading" area any where near Leeds / Bradford / Harrogate where I can take her for a try out

usually are. only downside is there sometimes a bit on the spur of the moment, but will give you a shout anyway!
might be a little foray out this weekend if the weather keeps up. bit of puddle splashin an all that!

Buy the Ashcroft Transmissions kit, you wont regret it...such a better car off road with Diff Lock AND traction control IMO
