What have you done to your Freelander today

Got the Bonnet Open warning on my FL2 today, so after a bit of internet searching I pulled connector off the sensor and shorted the terminals in the plug with a bent pin.
Now I need to decide whether to replace the sensor or to try cleaning it up to get it working again.
Today I took the switch off, cleaned the plug and socket, bent the spring that operates the switch out a bit, checked it worked and then re-assembled it. I don't know how long it will last, you can't take the actual switch apart to clean the switch contacts.

P.S. Yesterday the odometer clicked over 100,000

Towed a little Erde unbraked trailer full of rocks 60 miles to my daughter’s yesterday (she’s building a rockery). Conservative estimate, 1 ton. Needed 75psi in the trailer tyres to stop them looking flat! Not the heaviest tow my old FL2 has done, but the heaviest unbraked load by along way. And yes, I know it was illegal. Had to keep reminding myself to keep my speed down to 60 on the motorway. Car never noticed the extra load.
 
1 ton in a 300kg rated trailer for to miles. :eek::eek::p
I thought I was mad putting 900kg of sand in my Erde 145 for a 5 mile trip.:D

The Freelander will have no problems, I'm not so sure the suspension on the trailer would be happy about it.:oops:
Yes, I can confirm, that it was a silly idea.

As "a friend" did exactly the same with paving blocks in a 750kg rated trailer, don't know how many tons I he had, but it popped a wheel off. Luckily I he thought it was a tad over weight and was driving quite slowly.

Starter problem. I was away on holiday over Easter and the FL1 wouldn't start one morning. Absolutely nothing. No solenoid clicking, no turning over - nothing. I thought it could have been the immobiliser in action and that maybe the fob battery was flat. I managed to find a replacement battery but still NBG. Had a think and gave the starter a couple of good taps with a hammed and it turned over right away. It has been good for two weeks no.
Today the same thing. I'm home again now and I've a couple of starters stashed away - one is from a Rover 200Vi. I tried fitting that starter but couldn't get it into place as it has a slightly larger diameter and catches on the gearbox mount. So a new OEM starter ordered from R Bros.

How much is it from Rimmers? I got one last month for my L Series same day in Chch for about $280. Think I got lucky on availability.

OEM starter was $218 freight $85 & $44 GST so about $345 in all. I priced at 2 different auto electricians both indicated between $400 & $500
Next time you guys have starter issues, just buy the solenoid repair kit. In the UK a repair kit costs under £30, and only takes 20 minutes to fit, once the starter is removed.

The solenoid is the lump on the side of the starter. Pretty much the only thing that does wrong with these Denso starters is the solenoid contactor set burns, preventing the battery current from getting to the motor brushes.
The contactors are an easy job to replace, and cheap compared to the whole starter too.
 
Did a full service today oil filter oil air filter fuel filter pollen filter brake fluid change most of the time was spent on that oil filter what a stupid place to fit it

Freelander 2 2.2L diesel?
It's not the best location, but that's really down to the design of the vehicle, rather than the engine. In a PSA vehicle it's easy to get at, but it's a long way down on the Freelander, because of the higher slam panel.
It takes me about 10 minutes to change it now, but I've done it lots of times.

Sounds like a plan, I can rebuild the one I took off as a spare. Can order a shuttle valve kit for the Wabco ABS unit and get around to fixing one of them in readiness to.
The solenoid is the lump on the side of the starter. Pretty much the only thing that does wrong with these Denso starters is the solenoid contactor set burns, preventing the battery current from getting to the motor brushes.
The contactors are an easy job to replace, and cheap compared to the whole starter too.
However, the one that came off was an Oki Kokie 2000 (or what ever) brand that was installed a few years ago. Do you recon the solenoid repair kit would work on it?

I'll have to have a dig around and see if I kept the original starter motor (assuming that wasn't itself a replacement as the car was 10 years old when I got it).
 
Currently 2/3rds of the way through changing my starter contacts on the TD4. It's gone well so far but just can't manipulate the motor back in! Time to wash the blood off my fingers, have an IPA and sunday roast before attempting again in an hour.
