what a garage said about timing belt change

Hi all

I need some advice due to me not having total confidence in changing the timing belt myself i`ve spoken to some local garages inc landy indys.
amounts ranging from 240>500 to sort which opened my eyes abit.

The weird thing is only one garage a non landy indy mentioned a common fault apparently even though i mentioned mileage currently at 102k which means belts probably done before,

" on removing two long bolts when removing water pump thats go into the timing cover they always snap so i`d need a new cover"??

had a quick search on site never noticed that mentioned

Is this true or just a tactic to get more dosh out of me.

any help or advice would be great

what landy is it first ???

i presume its 200 tdi its possible to snap bolts but you wouldnt need new cover ,£200 about right for job not difficult

the 200+vat is a local garage thats got a good rep on various forums think the garage has been mentioned on here before did a search on the site its called ridgeways i think someone got there freelander done thats how i found it ,

its a mg/rover and landy independant specialist in rotherham seems to get good reviews on various sites

ya wont need to touch the water pump there pulling your plonker

even easier as you have dont have to remove water pump ,timing cover is seperate £160

Called to a garage in Leeds who claim to specialize in auto transmission and quoted between £800 and £1000 to replace a sticky valve for my disco 2.5 tdi.
told them not to bother could buy another gearbox in fact could buy another disco for that, total rip-off.

cheers for the info its going into a garage called ridgeways i`ve no association with it will post up a review when they`ve worked on it to say if it`s good or bad.

I paid £130 for mine. That was cambelt, aux belt, air con belt, new coolant, oil top up.

I supplied the cambelt kit someone gave me and everything else the garage supplied.

never just change the belt always get the kit! it may save you £30 now but it could cost you hundreds if a tensioner fails

that sounds a good deal £130

mines £200 which is coolant change,radiator flush & intercooler flush and the garage supplying and fitting updated timing belt kit.

I paid £200 for a new cam belt, fitted. This was from my local specialist.

Bear in mind, that there is a modification on the bearings and pulleys which needs doing as well. This is to prevent the belt from throwing forward and wearing on the cover.

My price included all the mods as well, I think anything over £250 and you should perhaps question the cost.
