welding s/s

Hello been welding with a mig for over 20 yrs no prbs but in the procces of making a s/s bumper its a pain in the backside can't seem to get a good run got the right wire n gas do i need to change the tip as well. using an elland 145 amp set. Any tips or info grateful.Cheers.

been told its fookin hard to weld very specialist

i always thought you had use tig for stainless and in a well ventalated area

you can weld s/s with a stick welder tig welder and a mig welder , you just need to spend a bit of time fine tuning it for the s/s , having gas set right is a big one what gas are you using by the way

i'm using argoshield universal

You need more gas than for mild steel (that's how I got best results, I just upped the reg a touch) and yer standard argo shield is normally 50/50 argon and co2 which is way too much co2, ideally you want pure argon. I have heard that you are fine with 5% or a max of 10% co2 or it doesn't flow nicely.

:confused2: me too

Argoshield (about 10-15% argon), use more amps and a little less wire feed than with mild steel, there's nothing 'specialist' about welding stainless you just need to get you mig set up to suit, Titanium on the other hand is a totaly different fishy kettle! Stick with it you'll get there, you might find changing the copper tip for a new onr makes a difference as stainless seems to 'pick up' a bit.

It's all in the prep

also pure argon sheild gas would be best
