Had my Disco 1 approx 8 months, 7 and 1/2 of them months it has been SORN. Of the 2-3 weeks I've been driving it I have already had 3 problems of note.

1. It wouldn't start....at all. So for the first 3 days of full landy ownership I didn't have a vehicle. Turns out it just needed a new earth wire/lead, not a big problem but still not a good start.
2. Exhaust has come loose. Only the final 3rd or so but needs sorting out.
3. Oil is now leaking from somewhere. From my very little knowledge of landrovers it looks like the rear axle diff box? Is that a thing? It's the round connection in the middle of the rear axle. Oil is definitely coming from there as it has a hole at the top. Will try to upload pics when I (if i) get home.

Welcome to Land Rover!!!

I don't Vin no. Would a problem with these caused the hole?

Also the drivers window now won't close :( can see motors running but it isn't pushing the glass up! Think it may have slipped off

Baptism of fire.

Exhausts are very cheap. You might need a grinder to separate though.

Diff leak -,if its the plug half way up ish that's the filler / level. There should be no hole, beyond the recess to fit the tool in.

Is the plug knackered, or not tight, or needs a new washer (can't remember if they have washers though)

Not fussed about exhaust like you say cheap enough to buy and may be able to weld anyway.

Window is up after taking door panel off and finding that the rollers/washers that connect to the metal arms are shot, so the glass falls off, hence no window going up.

Now the big problem! Looks like something has shot out (see pic) of the diff causing a very clean but very frusting and probably expensive problem!

No washer on the fill/drain plugs, and there is a hole for the breather on the top side of the axle case near centre, but it should have the breather tube attached with a banjo.
A quick google image search will tell you what it should look like. In fact, a search on here will probably turn up a detailed schematic.

Looks like you've hit your axle drain plug on something (like a dingus) and torn your drain hole out. Can prob weld it up as long as you don't warp the thread.

When you say the exhaust has "come loose", is it blowing? Or just missing a mounting rubber?

He said the hole was in the top and if that's the hole then something looks like it's punched from inside which will probably mean a new diff required and then the axle welded or replaced.

Deffo looks like something has made a bid for freedom from the internals of the diff.

Midge, is this a new problem?, Or just something you did not see before?

If it is as it looks , then easiest way to fix, Pull the diff out and get someone in the know to check what has gone wrong. If necessary change the diff for a good second hand unit or a recon replacement. while it is out get the diff pan welded up ( if the hole is in the diff pan , difficult to se on photo). Pulling the diff out and replacing is an easy job

Also depending where the hole is , you may have a real lack of oil in your diff, probably not a good idea to drive too many miles.

Would help if you showed a wider angle photo to show us exactly where the hole is in relation to the axle,

Good luck

Cheers

Hey guys. Will get another pic later, but the hole is at the very top of the diff.

Not sure if it is a new problem or not. First time I noticed it was yesterday so thinking it's a recent issue but, looking at the road where I park there is a few stains on the road so may have been going on longer then I know!

Not going to drive it now as unsure how long it's been like this and don't want to cause further damage! Booked into garage on Monday so hopefully will know more then.

Hope its just the diff box that has broke and not effected the axle or anything else in any way :(

Thanks for all your input again it's really helped and ive learnt something new again!

Complete rear axle need. Also the two rear shocks are leaking oil.

Shocks not a problem as got a brand new set off eBay for £70, just struggling to find a replacement axle!
