Evening all,

I've come over to the dark side, sold my Freelander and got a Disco 2 as of last weekend. Here comes the first problem:D (and I've tried searching for this one but I'm either not searching for the right thing or I've missed it).

First time out in the dark last night. Switched to main beam, then back to dipped beam....nothing but sidelights (dipped beam gone completely). And it's repeatable (main beam works every time but when switched off goes down to sidelights).

Here's where it gets weird though. Tried it sitting on the drive tonight, dipped beam > main beam > sidelights. Remove the key from the ignition and put it back in again though (ignition not turned on at all, it's just a case of removing and reinserting the key) and hey presto, the dipped beam comes back on!

Anyone able to give me any pointers at all? I haven't had the chance to start taking things to bits yet and I've read about problems with the stalk, but surely the ignition key being taken out and put back in can't resolve that one can it?

Open to any suggestions before I get the hammers out at the weekend and start looking

Couple of times I've switched dipped to main beam the lights have gone out (good fun at 60 down country road!!)
Got to be the stalk in my case, seems coincidental to your symptoms. Putting the key in/out could be just enough vibration to tip a dodgy stalk switch.
NB you WERE on the dark side, seen the light now! (Present issue aside)

Oooh.....soft porn ;) Thank you - it's going to help

I only got rid of it because the clutch slave cylinder was on the way out. It was one of the few Hippo's in the area that actually had a working VCU on it :)

BTW - are you a real DJ? The main reason for going for the Disco was to cart my gear around instead of using a trailer

OK - looks like I'm going to have to have the steering shroud off at the weekend to poke around with the stalk and see if that's the issue (I've still got the scars from replacing the Freelander's ignition barrel a couple of weeks ago so not looking forward to this)

No, not a DJ by profession, D and J are my initials and just happen to have a Disco!
