Hi guys,, new to this,,,
u r probably sick of the same old questions,,
I am the no longer proud owner of a 02 discovery td5,,, I am just a very sick of it all owner at this stage,,,
my engine had a cracked head at 105,000miles,,I realised this when i had more diesel in the sump than oil!! I was advised to fit a second hand engine,,,, this has been done,,, and now I have a top rad hose which is as hard as a jockey's u know wot,,, drove 50 miles with it and it burst the bleed screw off the top hose,,, replaced top pipe with a genuine lr part,, ,
refilled it with coolant,,, drove it again,,, tophose very hard,,, seems to me that the pressure is way to high,,, new waterpump fitted,,, same thing,, thermostat is ok,, opening as it should,,, heater inside throwing out plenty of heat etc etc,,, temperature gauge doesn't rise above normal,,
I know the stock answer is going to be "Head Gasket",,, but the replacement engine only has 50,000miles on it,,, is Land Rover really that crappy,,, that a 50,000mile engine needs a head gasket replacement??
My gut instinct tells me YES!!! But my feminine side is still naive enuf to hope for something else,,, could it be airlocks,,, plz tell me it is,,
I am down €2650.00 already for the new engine,,, and just wondering where the hell this is going???
Original engine was the newer EU3 type,, replacement is the EU2 type, if that is relevant.
I have read so many forums about plastic head dowels failing and causing movement,,, who in their right mind puts plastic in an engine,,,
Looking for serious alternatives to head gasket b4 I go down that route,,, anyone out there that can console me,,, or any one with a spare gallon of petrol and a lighter?
Thnx for reading my rant,,, Paul,

It certainly sounds like typical symptoms of the TD5 HG failure.

How did you test both the valves on the thermostat? Aswell as the temp operated side that starts opening at 82degs C and finishes opening at 95 degs C, it also has a bypass valve that opens when the engine revs exceed 1500rpm.

The joys of a s/h engine.
You dont know what was done to it in its former life it could have been run dry if a rad leaked or anything really.

Does sound like a poss HG failure though.

Well Meego,, good luck wit the doc,,, hope it is not ur headgasket that's leaking!!:):)

Question for Ratty,,,
I kno how the thermostat works,, reacts to temperature etc,, but i have never heard about this bypass valve u mentioned,, how does that work,, u said it reacts at 1500 revs,,,but wot makes it open or close,,, pressure???
it is new to me,,, love to know more about it.
