Check your carpet in the drivers side if its wet your o rings have gone on the heater matrix.

Check your water pump front of engine behind fan see if thats leaking
Check yur radiator see if thats leaking somewhere.
Check your pipework see if you have any lose conections.

Do a search on water loss.

Cant think of anything else:cool:

ive just took cap of and run engine at first it pushed out some water from out the top then it levelled off then it went down i prusume thats the pump there is 2 pipes at the top and the 1 i think must be an overflow cause i can see water comming from it also its bubbling is this normal

ive had it running 20 mins and the only water that has leaked is from having the cap off and me filling it no water leaks i can see been round all pipes i can see and nothing on drive way if i was losing half a kettle full it was either nearly empty or id have a realy bad leak wouldnt i????????

Any sludge inside the rocker cover?-take the oil filler cap off and have a look. Has the oil level in the sump gone up mysteriously??
Take the plugs out-is one or more looking different to the others??

Water just don't go nowhere, its is coming out from some place, unless you haven’t filled it right up or have an air lock, run the car, until warm give the throttle a blip, and look at the exit of the exhaust is it coming out of the back of the tail pipe, its best if you drive it and someone looks for you, because it settles in the baffles

The water will boil with the cap off because it isn't under pressure, so the boiling point is higher with the cap on

Check the water is full, top it up
Check for Air in the system
check the exhaust, for water

are you puffing out condensation, allthough prob hard to see in this weather, i had this, i was making clouds, it was raining where ever i had been..
no seriouly if theres no sign of external leak and carpets dry it sound sadly like a h/gasket issue or as i had, cracked block!.
i was using water at an incredible rate, kept driving it constantly topping it up and eventually it started to over heat. No 4 and 6 spark plugs were rusty, internally rusty, say no more..

Well guys-I was trying to be gentle with my suggestions as I hate to see a grown man cry!! I had a 3.9 Vogue with a porous block and last year my 4.6 HSE started steaming out the exhaust so a new short lump had to be fitted as either the liner had slipped or the block had gone porous.
Nothing better than depression especially with all this lovely weather we're getting.
Stay positive until proven otherwise. The Rocker cover, plug condition and steaming like the Flying Scotsman may give the game away.
First time I got caught with the Vogue I replaced the head gaskets twice in so many weeks before I accepted the inevitable.
As the song goes, however, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life"

i think your right about h/gasket or cracked /porous block overheated today only went 6 miles took cap off and water shot out like a gizer over pressured rang local L/R and they told me i might get away with putting in something like radweld but its from america £80 supposed to work does anyone know what it might be and where to get some from and thank you to all who have helped with suggestions

Have a look on Egay under Range Rover p38 parts section-it's usually on there for about 30 squids and for that money compared with the alternative costs for a short motor it's got to be worth a shot. I have not used it myself but they claim it works. Personally I would not consider it a permanent fix-unless anyone else on the forum knows better.

no condensation ,carpets dry would there be any power loss if head gasket cos its like shi of a shovel it runs so lovely the rad looks like new i thought it was air but i stuck hose on and flushed it through but it still bubbles not constant every 40-50 secs

Short Motor is brand new block (Not recon), complete with new crank, pistons camshaft and hydraulic tappets, timing gears and chain. Use your own heads, sump, front cover and all other bits. Cost me around £3000 a few months ago all up but I fitted a new front cover, rockers and shafts and push rods plus all the gaskets etc. Took myself and a mate three good days from start to finish. Found the most competitive deal from Autopost in London (They have website).
Looking back at the previous posts, it could be that you just have a head gasket gone cos of the bubbling, why not try replacing them first.

hiya chris before you stick any of that ****e in the cooling system just a thought here .
when i bought my p38 4.6 it had overheating issues the guy that owned it was told by his garage that the engine was stuffed , it drove fine sounded nice , but after 10 mls or so temp gauge shot right up and it bucketed water out , anyway i checked the leak off pipe from the top of the radiator to the header tank and although the pipe was clear the nipple it goes onto on the header tank was blocked solid once this was cleaned out i refilled it with water and 5000mls later its still no problem , i stuck a new radiator on just to be on the safe side as well for what it cost it seem daft not to its got to be worth a try good luck anyway .

i too thought of this when mine was giving trouble, the trouble i had though like this guy is that it wasn't necessarily overheating, just loosing a load of water, a litre in 25 miles!! as long as it was toped up every so often it was fine, for 4 months or so then come the summer and it couldn't cope. i heard of that pipe causing trouble but then it wouldn't be loosing water!!
i tried kalimex Kseal, it did no good at all although highly recommended.
just got me hopes up and wasted £25.....
had new (another) block crack tested and pressure tested, machined and rebuilt with all new bits, heads in fact hole engine as you do BUT with top hat liners so they will never ever slip, ever and new rad, thermostat, pacet electric fan, water pump, oil change every 4000 and its like a new motor. cost a bit, £2700 for engine and rad but now it should last forever. (i hope)
if its a nice motor it may well be worth it............

right update ive had a word with my mate who is a machanic he says to try this kseal first if it dont work he will do the gasket for me but im unsure how many litres of water it holds as this kseal does cooling systems up to 20 litres can anyone tell me if i need 2 bottles or will 1 be enough.
and i think this is site is fantastic i thank you all for your suggestions

hi if i were you i would definitely check on that pipe first before you add any kind of miracle cure potion to your cooling system .
the only time i would put this kind of stuff in a car of mine is if i was going to get shut of it via the auctions and just wanted it to get there .
redrange in answer to your question mate if that hose blocks it cant properly vent the cooling system , so once it running and driving it slowly heats up and the air thats in the system expands to the point where it pushes the remaining coolant out of the expansion tank via the overflow .
and chris mate please think very carefully before adding that crap to your cooling system mate , get the problem sorted properly if your planning on keeping the car or you will just be making further problems for yourself in the future the only cure for an overheating rangerover is to find the fault and do a proper repair , i dont mean to **** on your fireworks mate , just being honest .
