I've just bought a 2000 1.8 Freelander which was advertised as having HGF, but there are no signs of mayo on the cap or the dipstick. All I know is that it apparently chucked all it's water out and all I can find is a steady drip from the centre rear of the engine when you put water in, but there's no obvious burst pipe. Is there anything else I should be looking for? core plugs, etc?

try to see excatly where it is comimg from it my be that the head gasket has gone on the outer edge but as you say it could be a core plug simple just take out and knock one in hope this helps

If there's a steady drip then it may be that your intake manifold gasket is fecked. It's a really easy fix and the new gasket is pennies.

there are so many different answers to this question!

your best bet is to do a search on LZ as they have all been covered before at great length, also look in the FAQ's as well ;)

WLJ's answer sounds most likey by what you described.

Either that or either the waterpump to thermostat o ring, or thermostat to metal coolant pipe o ring buggered.

Get the engine hot with coolant system pressurised. Then let it go cold, as its going cold, check the back of the engine for drips or stains on the rear of the block. Inlet manifold warp is kinda common on these. Tends to spew it water out when engine is cooling down when parked up.
