Water leak to interior

Can anyone give me a clue as to how water is entering my vehicle. Both sunroofs have been removed and fully sealed, the alpine lights removed and resealed, sealant use wherever relevant and yet water is still geting in and drips out of the box section that runs the length of the vehicle, coming out of a gap in the box section just under the alpine light - trim has been removed to see this clearly . I have checked a number of times and is is definately from this gap, not water running round the underside and dripping off the section.

Its driving me mad to understand where its getting in - the only other possibility I can think off is the roof rail mountings, but if it were there I would have thought it would be dripping onto the headliing, which it is not

I presume you have a TDi 300.

Water can get in through the top of the windscreen, check the area and see if the rubber has perished. To eliminate the area use some electrical tape and temporary seal the top of the windscreen with it. If the water stops then get the windscreen re-bonded. The other area is near the clips on the drip rail at the rear above the tailgate. again to eliminate this tape up the area.

To fix my old TDi 300 windscreen leak I used some seek and seal, injecting it between the rubber seal and the roof area.

I then got hacked off with the leaky roof and brought a TD5 which had just had all the sunroof seals and drip cups replaced.

This is exactly the fault I have, I have been told to rake out and re-seal the gutters from front to rear. I'm waiting for the weather to dry and warm up a bit though. Also to check the roof bar mounts, I'll drop the headlining and check front to back as it's really making a mess in the boot now.

Is it possible that the screen seal could be at fault too??

Could be. Certainly was on mine. as you drive off any water moves to the back and can appear anywhere...

Worth checking for any pin holes in the roof channel.

Ok, i nipped out as it has been dry today and taped along the top of the screen. See if that makes any difference, there did seem to be easy access there as I could not see any mastic or sealant at all!!

Ha Ha ,I think its just one of those land rover things! discos leak ,and good luck finding it . Windscreen where it joins the roof-reseal,roof gutters-spread sealant along it,heater air intake-sealant around it. will probably drip in the rear quarter by the side windows as water runs inside along the seams and soak the foam and rubber underlay in boot and rot it.same in front footwells,till it rots through,and A posts ! remove all the foam underlay from front footwells and keep a couple of small towels under the carpet to wring out when its rained! and bin the boot underlay.

I tried without the sound deadening mat and it's not so quiet/comfy so I plan to wait until the summer then remove the headlining and mats then seal all leaks best as possible. Then I'm hoping to paint the lower half with rubber tank lining liquid which will effectively make it watertight so a damp mat will do nothing but smell. This stuff only works in the warm so can't be done yet.

I'd rather fix the problem than remove what is a very good sound damping mat. I'm sure it can be done, just not in the winter.

my 200 leaks onto the right rear boot floor overnight when its raining heavy.... think its running down the right rear pillar .... sunroofs and alpine lights are sealed with black sticky gunge.....
in the gutter above the rear door theres a join each side in the plastic which looks like it lets water go somewhere so ive just gunged them both up... but hasnt rained since

Well it's been raining for a couple of days steady and the sticky tape on the top of the screen seal has made a massive improvement!!

There is still a couple of small drips but the torrent has stopped and all by a simple bit of leccy tape

Hopefully the tape will hold out for some warm weather and I'll seal the hell out of it with sikaflex. I'll still get the headlining down I think and do a full job on it.

When you stick the tape on make sure it goes past the corners at the top, sometime double it up. when its dry get some seek and seal, or mastic flexible sealant (Black) and inject it in between the rubber seal and windscreen/roof. Pay particular attention o the corners Wipe off any excess, reapply the leccy tape for 2/3 days until it dries out. Remove the tape and monitor the results.

I did this on my old 300TDI and it only cost me £3...

I should have asked if you brought my old 300.....?

Yes, lots of overlap. Hopefully it'll hold for warmer weather and I'll seal all round the screen, get headlining out and check sunroofs and roof bars, then do the bit over the back door as I think that's whe the last drops are coming from.

I'm determined to get the old girl dry

Ok, so im getting ****ed off now,

following the encouraging result i had with the front screen tape, i was looking forward to actually geting a dry interior. This morning, after i got to work, i opened up the back door to reconfirm the results and WTF, the inside looked like a swimming pool! The roof lining was now soaked and dripping and had come away from the foam crap backing, the loadspace cover had a puddle in it and the back headrests were now wet.

What the bloody hell could have changed so dramatically? I can only guess a sunroof seal has totally failed now to let that much water in?

Now the lining has definately got to come out and all the carpets etc.

I know how you feel mine did this the day before yesterday, looks like it came in the rear sun roof ran towards the front beside the drivers seat and now I have a saggy headlining as well, car is all full of condensation

Sounds the same, cant see why it would suddenly fail though, mine looks like the interior has been jetwashed!

Mine went like that quickly (nice when the drivers seat is wet-and the condensation is fu**ing unbelievable)-Went round all the window seals with clear silicon sealant-doesn't look pretty ,but doesn't leak anywhere anymore-sort it out better in summer

May have fixed it! Took off gutter trims from left and right top corners of rear door down to the section that goes around to meet up with gutters each side of vehicle. There are several places where gaps or joins in gutter are evident, put sealant around any suspect area and long the gutter lip. Also noted that under the very rear part of the gutter to where it joins the rear window panel there were gaps in the original seal - put sealant in this area too. After several hours rain no water evident in car!! (fingers crossed!!!)

Excellent, thats exactly where i need to attack then as i have a waterfall in the back now!!

Did you rake out the old junk or just mastic over the top, what mastic did you use??
