td4 '02, manual, 3 door...........clutch was juddering, now slipping. Love the car and want lo-ratio but doesn't exist. Auto may be my only option.
Judging by the cost of a new clutch and/or conversion to non dual mass flywheel, I have decided that I wish to convert my manual to auto.
Who's done it and what are the pitfalls?

Would be easier to get yours fixed then sell it and buy an auto Freelander.

I love my car....has the right wheels, towbar, chip, interior, history........new battery, oils etc. rather keep mine........it's my friend.

Back in ye olden days when cars had carburettors and points ignition, swapping boxes was normally fairly easy as the auto box was purely mechanical, but on a modern car, an auto box is controlled by an ECU. To swap a freelander box, I would prefer to have an entire donor vehicle - that way I could take any and every part I needed from one source rather than mess about buying stuff here and there and finding I still have some parts to try and source.
Box, pedals, loom, ecu, God-knows what sensors it might need, perhaps different mounts......
It would be much easier and I would bet much cheaper overall to just buy an auto freelander. Nothing to stop you swapping the good bits off your own onto the new car.

I completely empathize with you - my car is my friend too - I have put so much of my time (and money) into it I want to keep it until it (or I) fail the annual test. Some of us grow very attached to our vehicles.

However.......if you look at the price of buying a 2002 TD4 auto, I think you will find it is cheaper than buying an auto-box plus all the parts / labour needed.

I sold my 2002 manual TD4, (kept all the extra goodie bits) and bought an auto back in 2004. There are hordes of things different - far too many to list.

I feel by attempting a conversion, you will be digging a hole to pour money down - and you will still have only one car at the end.

I reluctantly have to agree with earlier posts - repair your car - buy an auto - swap the bits you want - sell the original car, now minus the goodies.

Makes financial sense.

I'm an old romantic and every time I've sold a vehicle I had owned for several years, it 'brought a tear to the eye' remembering the journeys and the good times with it. Funny how you don't remember the repairs, replacements and hassle!

Good luck mate.

you will also need the oil cooler which is part of the radiator I am sure as it used to be you will need the gear shift there is a lot more to it than you think as Dave said it is a lot more difficult than you think

Chaps, many thanks. I am postponing the inevitable. You have sealed my notions. It's just not worth the bother, is it? Recon auto boxes plus converters are being called in at £800. On top of that all the other bother........so, I'm not going to do it.
Next point is though, do I convert my dual mass flywheel back to a solid one? All suppliers are asking if I want this conversion. Bearing in mind my two year clutch judder on my standard (second) dual mass. Is it time to convert to a non dual mass?
