Hi just a quick question, my 200tdi defender started whining in 4th and 5th a while ago but just recently its also gone into 3rd and got alot louder and has also started vibrating a bit and makes it really akward to drive. Does anybody have any ideas what it cud be?. Ive lay under it this morning with it in neutral and handbrake off and there is alot of up and down movement in the handbrake drum on the end of the transfer box. Is my transfer box knackered?? cheers in advance Dave.

you might need to start with rear out put brg( stc1130 )remove 30mm spanner sized nut then flange 4 x 15mm bolts holding hand brake assembly remove speedo housing tap shaft out ,remove seal and circlip ,circlips should only be fitted one way round with smaller hole size toward pliers.you can check diff brg while speedo housing off

if hand brake drum lifts up/down out put brg at least worn
well had a look at this last nte, i removed the rear prop to find the centre nut had actually wound itself loose, dont no how as its a nyloc???. then thought i wud check the level. I removed the drain and nothing came out lol. ive filled it up with oil and tightened the centre nut but now its worse. Think the damage is already done. So ive got a secondhand transfer box off a mate which im going to be putting in on saturday. cheers for the help.
