Veggie oil

Ive just started running my 90 on veggie oil,

Now this is all a bit new to me so first of all,

Is it best to just chuck it strait in there or to mix it up with some deisel in a seperate container and give it a shake up then pour it in?

and also

What do you recommend percentage wise for veg oil to diesel?

I just pour the veg ontop of the diesel with a cap full of white spirit. Mines a 2.25 Series III. I use about 70:30 diesel or 80:20 diesel

i just pour it in, it will mix in the tank. just remember to change your fuel filter regular

I changed mine in August, before that it had one from the 80s or 90s in!

i put 12 litres of veggie oil straight from the bottle into my td5, she didnt like starting this morning but there wasnt a great deal of dino diesel in it before i put it in, so i put a tennas worth in and it seems ok now. ill have to wait and see what its like in morning

Iamjack. What engine is in your 90 ?

Are you using new or used veg oil ?

In the summer you should be ok with 50:50, in winter maybe 80:20. A small amount of Acetone is supposed to be better than white spirit.

Veg oil will clean your fuel system so expect to clog filters a lot to start with as any old crud from your tank gets removed.

Always carry a spare filter in the glove box.

used veg oil in my 200tdi for a short time , be carefull as it caused problems with my diesel pump so stopped using it .

I used to run my Disco1 on veggie oil...rape seed is purer and you can get it from wholesalers in 20 litre drums... if you are buying re-cycled chip oil then its okay as well. Corn Oil is not so pure and my Disco 2.5 tdi ran crap on it. During the winter its pretty thick and in summer its fine and thin. During the hard winters many years ago ( before additives were added at the refineries ) truckers used to add a spot of petrol to their diesel to keep it thin. I did this with my veggie oil a cup of gas to 20 L of veggie oil and about 5 gls of diesel in a full tank. A drop of petrol wont cause any damage and over the years I never had a problem... except one cold day I forgot to add the petrol and it was so thick it struggled to get going. I did over 450 miles on single track roads with a full pay load in the wagon. nae bad!!

10 to 15% petrol is ok in colder weather, i would not run a td5 on veg as i thought it was a common rail injection system and should be run on biodiesl. As far as white sprit is concerned, thats a rebated oil and could result in your car being taken away if you get your tank dipped. 70 to 80% veggy is fine even when it's really cold - just thin it with petrol and don't expect it to run like a watch for a few minutes

sunflower oil is the best for low temps

As far as I know and I've been running on wvo for over 18 months:

1. td5's don't like it
2. if you're gonna use either wvo or svo never add more than 10 % petrol to thin it down.
3. Never thin it down with white spirit or anything else that you haven't paid fuel duty on.
4. be prepared to smell like a chippie going down the road (but who cares when it's so cheap!)

tis me again,

last winter when it went to -21 all the diesel was frozen and everything diesel wasn't going anywhere... except the ones with a drop of additive or petrol. Our local filling station made massive sales on the additive for thinning diesel. Even some trucks had fires underneath to warm the pumps and diesel. This is too cold for veggie oil unless you have an in line heater and have thinned it with petrol. If yo try white spirt in some veggie oil you will notice that it won't mix!!!

Just for interest for a long time I've been running my old fairway taxi on diesel with two stroke oil added.The engine is quieter with it,the diesel rattle much less noticeable and it seems to run a bit smoother.
I wonder if this would help an engine running veg to run a bit better,just a thought.

No, I'd be ok coz you're allowed to use 2500 litres of w/svo as fuel in a domestic vehicle before you have to pay duty on it but if you've some white spirit in there that could get you into trouble as you haven't paid fuel duty on it.
