I've seen an early 'black door top' 1998 Freelander 1 1.8L for sale with a blown head gasket.

It has approximately 140,000 km (87,000 miles) on the clock and is unregistered.

Although only 1,500 or so Freelander 1's with black door tops were produced, they haven't reached a collectable status yet in Australia.

What would this car be worth?

I don't have the VIN but I doubt it is a pre production model.

UK values are likely to be very different to those in Australia, but as you say, the Hippo has yet to become an appreciating classic. I bought mine for £275 (albeit Spares and Repairs and a failed head gasket). This one may be worth a little more to someone "in the know", but to everyone else, it's just another old Freelander...

Wow!!!

This one looks EXACTLY like my grand father's 1.8 Super - he got the bigger engine so he could tow a caravan. This one was later replaced by a metallic blue one that looks very similar to the blue on that site!

Wow, major nostalgia rush!!! :D

The Morris Marina. That brings to mind a newspaper report from the Sydney Morning Herald. It was a motoring journalist commenting that when Morris Marinas were being sold new none were ever reported as stolen across the Sydney area! It does say a lot about the intelligence of the thieves! LoL

Others must have the same worrying thoughts
For a Marina? erm, you need professional help :)
And it means I can feel less guilty looking fondly at early L-series Freelanders
Ahh, maybe you are not in such a bad way after all... but you still need help sorting out that Marina part of your personality.

Me, I'm an Allegro man.:eek::eek:

It would seam right that when prices do start going up, it will be the 'black door top' ones that go up first/highest. Bit like RR, a mank old 2 door is worth a lot more than a decent 1990 one with posh leather and all the other creature comforts.

Yes it's odd how they are worth more when not as practical. The 2 door Discovery seems to be the next one.

The difficulty is the rarest ones are the vehicles that were once cheap as chips. A good example would be the VW Kombi. I do some part time work for a Kombi restoration company and people are spending ridiculous money on even the 'Bay window' vans.

I'm a lost case GG: I have a strange soft spot for anything BMC/BL/ARG...

[Thank you nurse, the straight jacket was getting a little loose there...]

Completely agree! The "BAC" and "Black tops" will be the Freelanders to own in years to come... :)

I've a soft spot for BL, Rover and Land Rover vehicles too. Except for the Allegro and Marina, which I hated.

There was an article in L.R.M a few months ago about the black door top Freelanders. I can't see how they might appreciate more than some other cars that are available on the classic car market.

I used to drive a navy blue one of these on night shifts around various Shropshire market towns. It needed a kerb stone in the boot to stop it hopping over wet inspection plates in the centre of the road.

Yes we used to have Morrises. The last one was a brand new 1500 Nomad. The main problem over here was that the heat from the brakes transferred to the radiator and it would overheat terribly in city traffic.
