Hi all at present i have a 1992 200 tdi disco which has failed its mot i thought it might be time for a upgrade so im thinking along the lines of a v8(lpg converted) or 300 tdi i was wondering what the good points and bad points of these two are i use it off road a lot green laning and also im a member of a club so it gets a lot of use on the tracks at the club

The only difference will be the engine so.
Good points for a V8 it's faster and quieter, the bad points, it uses more fuel. and can be affected by deep water unless extra precautions are taken.

Good points for a Tdi it uses less fuel and the engine is not affected by deep water, the bad points it's slower and noisey.

The 300tdi is a possibly better deal than the TD5, which has a strange and expensive dual-mass flywheel, a head that has a cracking problem and a few others niceties.

The V8 on lpg is a good one to have, subject to the fuel consumption as pointed out by Discool, and the need for decent plug leads and plugs. Tappets are hydraulic so no maintenance, but in my experience so far they need to be run on good quality oil and like the diesels need to be regularly serviced.

The power out of the engine is much smoother and the transmission gets an easier time of it, so hopefully the V8 vehicle would have less mechanical problems over its life.

Try and get a manual one, the auto boxes tend to get fried by over-enthusiastic caravanners!

Would be interesting to see the torque curves though - peak torque is not always a good measure of available power. It may or may not be the case that although the V8 peaks higher, the diesel has a higher torque available through the revs

I'd personally prefer the diesel to the V8 in off-road situations myself, having driven diesels for the last 19 years until we got the V8 Disco2, but on the road there's no comparison.

my v8 auto 97 disco is the 1st disco ive owned and on the road its quite simply great... no knocks no rattles in fact it very quite and drives very smooth never drove a diesel disco so cant compare... but i reckon its a choice between comfort/power and rugged/capable (off road).

I believe your right rustyrhinos after watching Tdi's offroad they cover the ground so easy and with a reasuring go anywhere diesel beat of the engine, then the V8 comes along with lots of throttle, but my reply was just in responce to the torque figure stated.

Correct, nathan..
