Hi all,
I have had my V6 for about a month now and all has been well except for initially I'd notice if I had been driving for a while and then started idling that there'd be a slight "sound". I couldn't quite figure out what it was. It appeared to be coming from under the driver's side bonnet and if I was outside the car I couldn't hear it anymore.
Whenever I'd have a look with the engine off (or I'd start it and check) there was no sound.
Over the past few weeks the sound has been getting less and yesterday when I got home after being out for about an hour I could slightly hear it so I stopped, turned off and immediately popped the bonnet for a look - It all became very clear...
It turns out that the garage I bought it from must have overfilled the coolant expansion tank and that when I was driving around with the coolant hot - it was triggering the overflow in the cap and the excess was being emitted in spurts - This was what I was hearing.
Anyway whilst watching it for a few minutes with the bonnet raised, I was able to see the coolant level drop from being right at the top of the expansion tank, back down to where it had previously been... around 2 inches above the maximum level indicated on the tank.
My next job will be to syringe the excess off when the coolant is cold (first thing in the morning). I expect that all will be fine after that and that the strange sound will be a thing of the past.
Andy.
