hi there, my name is kris im from cardiff and i have just bought a v reg freelander 1. with the history of freelander i wasnt sure if to go ahead but love the looks and it came with so much paperwork of work done for it in the last few years.. its a 5 door in a champagne type colour.
all was well untill 4 days after i bought it ( trade seller might i add)
i went on the motorway to go home from work and it seemed fine. came on to the slip road for my exit and heard an almighty boom and a flashing of a triangle on my dash. mananged to nurse it to the local b&q carpark just off the slip. looking underneath and from reading posts on forums my prop has blown my ird. i can see oily grease over the underside of the car from the front where the prop meets the ird. ffs. it appears its totally failed but i had to get it home.restarted the engine and warning lights gone but seems it now running almost completly on 2 wd and whatever the boom was has sheered or damaged its 4 wd connection to the back. getting a smell of gas from the front so the ird must be leaking contents on to exhaust. i cant afford 250-400 quid for a refurb ird. so its to my local garage in the morning for prop removal and inspection. im thinking its now gonna be a scrapper. shame as its got reams of history. so hi people and unfortunately i may be saying goodbye in a few days time. they say freelanders are tempremental but four days use is a bit bad lol

:welcome: and sorry to hear your troubles but I'd be going back to the trader before doing anything.

I don't know much about them but as far as I understand the VCU get gets stiff and puts massive amounts of strain on the whole transmission which damages the IRD. It's a known issue (it's why so many are 2wd) and, in my opinion at least, one the dealer should have been aware off as the symptoms are fairly obvious.

and this might help you decide what to do about it http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f16/buying-crock-****-if-you-already-have-76002.html

Be careful with it, could knacker the diff if you drive it at all... Even at a snails. Had this with mine... Off the top of my head it cost about £265 for a reconditioned ird and fitting...

Vcu is about £30 and shouldn't cost much to fix it... It's worth getting that changed anyway.

Sorry you only had it 4 days :( mine knackered after 4 weeks though

Oh... Forgot to add. I took the garage to court that I bought mine off and won got all my money back so worth doing if you can be bothered :)

im back :p.
took it to the garage this morning to take the prop off so i could look at the ird and what had blown. seems it was the joint just after the ird, it had a boot around it. the entire thing had blown open and thrown grease all over the underside. he looked at the ird area and there is nothing coming out of there, so fingers crossed its not that. drove the car for about an hour today with just the 2wd and its driving lovely, only two issues are im getting a hell of a clicking noise from the front, thought it was front wheel as it does it when i take off or when i change gears. making me think its probably driveshaft?? you can actually feel the click as well as hear it. is it simple to replace the drivers side driveshaft do anyone know? when i look on the net it says it involves ird plugs and drains? any help greatly appreciated.

Just sell it and get the bus :D

Sorry, I'm too hungover to be of any use... BB!!?!!
