Sommat went bang, sounded like it was dragging along the ground and lkost drive. Engine running ok. Popped in low no difference so locked diff and now have drive but horrible noise.. guessing. I can pull half shafts to drive on and get to somewhere I can look tomoz but how do I know which ones and how do I jack the car without it rolling away while I do it?

in diff lock it cannot roll, sounds like busted half shaft. or front cv.
you could do a lot worse than removing front prop, difflock on and seeing what it is like

Ok so could be that.. I figured my cv was on way out so really sounds poss.. how likely is removing cv at the side of a road.. am I doing any more harm driving with horrible noise to do it tomoz (about 4 miles) aand no rave on me so any chance of a phone call to talk me through it? 07983 977 454

Sounds like a half shaft or diff gone, easey fast and cheap to do the shaft, easey not so fast but possibly costly to do a diff (I ain't bought 1 yet). Most probberbly half shaft though. Chock the wheels to prevent it from rolling away.

put handbrake on, hock front wheels, lift one rear wheel of the ground and try and turn it.
the handbrake locks the rear prop and diff, so if yu can turn the wheel, it has to be a halfshaft on that axle.

yu ok - or do ya need help?

put it in gear trans brake loo under neath see what prop is spinning

it'll show you which end to remove prop and halfs from to move

Thanks for the phone call fanatic.. have been under and is front cv joint transfer box end sheared.. so tried to undo diff and and no good.. no wd40 or anything with me.. tried to tie it up out the way but with it turning when the front wheels move keeps moving and hitting things on the way.. so aa called for a recovery.. question is do I get recovered home and get the train back tomorrow then go without the car for a week till I can get time to get back underneath it or do I get recovered locally and have a go at fixing it tomorrow..

Deciding factor is if it can be driven for any length of time with front prop off and diff lock on or if that's doing harm.. I presume the diff can't wind up with only rear wheels connected but maybe I'm wrong.. anyone still awake with a suggestion?

Oh and if I go in 2wd that's being recovered locally then pulling the prop off tomorrow, driving home Sunday and then about 100 miles of running around as I have my daughter next week before I have chance to get underneath again and replace the cv joint.. if I get recovered home I have to come back on train tomoz to collect stuff from where I'm staying in newport... of course there's a chance I might find someone here with the joint in stock to collect tomorrow but working on the basis that there isn't for now..

If u can get hold of a new uj locally in the morning, go to a local garage and av em put it on ur prop. Shouldn't cost more than £20 for the uj and fitting I reccon. Assumeing ur props not knackerd aswell.

Think I'm going to go home and get the train back in the morning unless the garage the aa send out want to quote me a reasonable price to fix it Monday morning.. although going without the car for a week is a nightmare I can't see I'm going to get it fixed tomoz with another hour at least to wait for recovery and I'm already knackered... and I might be able to get back in time to have a stab at taking the prop off and going in 2wd.. still don't know if that will do any harm though...

Personally I wouldn't drive in diff lock them many miles. It might not do any harm either but I haven't dun it so I don't know if it's a good idea or not. I'm 99% sure there will be a landy spares company sumwhere near you. Ask around in the morn (or ask the aa person) replacing a uj is really quick and easey, take out the circlips, Knock the uj from the yokes then fit the new one to one yoke, clamp home in a vice then do the other yoke. It will cost less than a train fair and take less time waiting at the station for a delayed train due to a leaf about to make contact with a rail.

Dgfs.. that's great advice and not outside what I already figured.. but I just had a gander in the boot and the bench and vice seem to not be there.. must have left them in the other car lol..

The garage that got sent by the aa (in a van to have a look see what's wrong) aren't open till Monday and no idea till then what it'll cost.. but would possibly lend me their workshop to take the prop off.. then I can stay here and see what my chances of a full repair are or drive it home slowly Sunday.. by which time more people will have likely posted here how much damage I'll be doing to some widget or other by driving it in 2wd.. .. or maybe I will find the part in stock and come up with a great way to fit the joints without a vice...

I'm sure there's more than one garage or workshop near you who may just happen to be open and willing to help you out for a pound or two. I'd try that route myself, but it's totally up to you.

Ffs - am i bloody invisible? Tigger, i told ya that Clutchdust lives local, i even txted yu his tel number. If you remove the front prop, there is no chance of any damage - its tge same as "Mondo" mode on a Gaylander! Now its morning, give him a ring and see if he is prepared to help ya. He is an ace Landy mech and is youre best bet. Most likely has tge bits anorl. Wots more important is he wont rip you orf either.
