So, here we go - a nice shiny bolt in my tyre. I've read a few older posts and it seems 50/50 - some chaps say "use repair kits", some say - get it repaired professionally.

I've looked at this kit on Amazon
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-Tyre-Repair-Kit-380421/dp/B001QUN9UQ/

Has anyone used it for permanent repairs? Can you actually repair a tyre without taking it off the alloy?

Actually, I've got a breakdown cover. Any idea whether this would cover me for punctures?

Cheers.

Yup, I have a similar set, used it on one of my BFG AT's and it's still on and up some 12000 ish miles later .. ;)

Follow the instructions and it usually goes well, don't try to shortcut anything, not that there's much to shortcut! Also used it on three other punctures on wifes and friends cars, none have had any problems since.

Only use it if the puncture is in the tread area. If it's in the sidewall or close too I wouldn't like to say if it'd work, but I wouldn't use it .. ;)

Umh... a fair point.

Has anyone had experience with breakdown cover? Looked at my policy but it doesn't go into details. Wondering if they'd help me with tyres or not?
twice i have had punctures and both times different garages pluged them with this type of kit

Bodgers then, or just a 'get me home'. Punchure repairs must be carried out to BS standards which means a tyre off job.
For info on the standard just look at a tyre fitting site that does repairs.

I wouldn't be happy with a 'plug on any of the cars I drive. and very glad that that the tyre doesn't have to be replace when punchured as on some fast cars I know of. :(.

I use the same temporary puncture repair kit that the AA and RAC do and as far as I am aware it is the only one that is road legal to use without removing the tyre to carry out the repair.

If ya need a hole plugging then yes the AA and RAC patrols can do it. Clubs along the lines of Greenflag, Brittania etc MAY do it depending on how well equipped the local garage or even the patrol that comes out is. I carry more parts and repair kits in my truck than probably 50% of the rest of the companies trucks combined.

Replacement tyres are usually done by calling out a local tyre company on your behalf. You are liable for the call out and tyre cost though.

Two of my firms vans don't have a spare wheel but only "temporary repair" air and sealent can supplied by the manufacture, so temporary used only and a 'get u home' just the same as the skinny wheels our cars we also have.

I wonder where the "legal" bit comes in, is there a law?

I'm on about actual repair plugs rather than tyre weld or similar sealant.
