Hi all

When my Defender 90 finally arrives, it is coming with some pretty new tyres on it but they are too big causing issues with full lock...no idea why dimwit before but them on without making required adjustments to make them fit, but hey ho.

The tyres in question are General Grabber TR 235 / 85 / R16 C

First question is whether or not eBay is best place to flog them and the wheels?

Second question is how much work is required to make it so full lock isn't an issue should I decide not to change them?

And final question is what tyres do I need? I have been reading into what the numbers mean (yep, knowledge really is that limited) but I suspect most of you have experimented with all sorts and have some robust views. I have been recommended BFG All Terrain but not progressed in terms of sizes. The 90 will be spending most time on road with occasional (might be more but will see he I get on) greenlaning...most driving will be on country roads rather than town or motorway...I would like the car to have strong presence (so wide tyres I guess)...but would prefer to not modify the setup just to accommodate tyres unless real benefit. Finally, I would like it to feel as stable as possible. Don't give a monkeys about road noise but interested in science of it!

Oh...and where is best place to buy from?

P.s. will probably be buying a wheel and tyre package as woud like cooler wheels if that makes any difference?
 
Just needs the lock adjustments made. 235's are good tyres. And those are some of the best.

I would consider posting a proper introduction and using search function, cos pretty soon theres gonna be **** taking coming your way.
 
Those are a standard fit size as above, so with proper adjustment you will have no issues.

To be honest, those tyres (the General Grabbers) will be perfect for the intended use you describe, though if you feel the need to spend money on bigger tyres for 'the look' then there is nothing stopping you doing so. However be aware that handling, comfort, and noise levels will be likely adversely affected, as well as inducing more wear on the mechanical components of the vehicle.

Ultimately, do as you wish to the vehicle, it is yours after all, but make sure that you do whatever you do in an informed state of mind. Enjoy :)

Did my intro a few days ago...I've used the search function loads over last few days, but prefer not to hijack other threads on forums with my specifics. I know it can be frustrating n forums when people ask same questions repeatedly, but when a forum has been going as long as this one, I suspect that every topic has been covered hundreds of times and new threads would never be started!

Happy for some **** taking...I'm the new boy so will take what's coming in the hope that in 5 years time I will be the **** taker rather than the **** takee!
 
Ideally the wider the tyre the greater the wheel offset will want to be to compensate for the steering lock/rubbing on radius arms, otherwise you would have a pretty poor turning circle. Then the greater the offset/tyre size the more stuff gets thrown up the bottom and side of the vehicle. Even 265 wide tyres on modulars rims become quite bad for spraying the side of the car with the slightest bit of mud/water etc. Its more of an issue when it comes back in the open window on the road etc. Just something to bear in mind.

The 90 came with 205 80 R16 or 235 85 R16 depending on the year. I suspect yours originally came with the former and the lock stops were adjusted to suit. Fitting the larger size needs the lockstops adjusting so the tyres don't rub. Its very easy to do, a simple tweak with a spanner.
The larger size makes for more comfortable cruising on road as they up the gearing by about 9%.
The GG TR tyres are an all terrain type and provide a good compromise with good road manners, long wear life and despite the conservative looks, surprisingly good performance off road and in snowy conditions.

If I were you I would stick with them until you know you need something different.

Didn't realise it was that easy to sort, that being the case, I will follow your advice and stick with what I have. May even get a spanner and have a go at sorting myself! Google here I come!
