Hi All,

I swear the engine has suddenly got loud when accelerating in turbo territory, sounds like a whistling fan coming from the passenger foot well. As soon as I back off the throttle it stops and doesn't do it until say 2000ish rpm

Car seems to perform as well as it did, mpg ok.

So is it possible I've just not noticed the noise or is something about to die?

I'd check all the pipes going to the turbo, might be a split in one,
and check the air filter box, all i can suggest there will no doubt someone in the know about Turbo's will be in soon

Thanks Rob, will do - I have noticed I only hear it under load, so just holding the revs at 2600 when stationary doesn't seem to produce it - only when accelerating.

Have you put a egr removal kit on as my discovery was whistling. Turned out the gasket that comes with it hadn't seated and was letting air in,
so we unbolted and reseated it using gasket seal

but it stayed a constant pitch that was only there under acceleration,
but if you still have the egr there probley is turbo whistle,

I think some turbos do whistle, some people I know were trying to get it louder by doing things to it. not seen them since..
could just be a seal on or in the Turbo..
sorry can't help further these are just experience i've had..
hope you get it sorted
Rob

Solved! I used an unusual technique called "opening the bonnet and looking", one learnt during my Alfa Romeo days.

The air pipe (90 degree bend) that I believe connects to the turbo (front top right of engine) had a bigger split than Jordon. Goes better know which was a surprise as I hadn't noticed a reduction in performance.

When i had the Freelander coming home from work one day just got over a rounabout accelerated and just started to die at 3000 rpm and then would not rev over that, pulled over opened the bonnett up, could not see anything wrong or smell anything a mate went past then came back we were there about half an hour trying diiferent things.

I had got my hand on the intercooler pipe my fingers were no where no the fans and my mate started it and my hand was getting oil.
We hadn't noticed a split in the intercooler pipe near the cooler itself

so luckly had 2 rolls of insulating tape in the car so wrapped that around the pipe and drove 8 miles to a parts place and got a new pipe.

This was really helpful thanks! Same thing happened yesterday and found big spilt in booster Pipe, £14 for new Pipe sorted
